Last Friday, 6-year-old Landon Johnson went to the RiverTown Crossings Mall in Grandville with his family. While there, the boy and his cousins took turns chatting with Santa, sharing their Christmas desires.

After telling the man in red he wanted a Wii, a toy dinosaur and a remote control car, Landon hopped off Santa’s lap to rejoin his family. But a few moments later, he raced back to Santa’s side: he’d forgotten to tell him something important. Specifically, Landon shared his worry with Santa that his autism(自閉癥) would land him on the “naughty list.”

His mom, Naomi Johnson, explained to WOOD-TV this week that Landon is often told he’s “naughty” by people who mistake his autism for bad behavior. “You get the stares when you’re at the grocery store if he’s too loud,” Johnson said. “He’s been told by other people before, ‘You don’t need to be so naughty,’ or, ‘Why are you naughty?”

Johnson says Santa took the time to listen to Landon’s worries, and held the boy’s hands all the while. “Santa sat him next to him and took Landon’s hands in his and started rubbing them, calming them down. Santa asked Landon if it bothered him, having Autism? Landon said yes, sometimes. Then Santa told him it shouldn’t. It shouldn’t bother him to be who he is,” Johnson said.

Landon told Santa that he sometimes “gets in trouble at school and it’s hard for people to understand that he has autism,” but that he’s “not a naughty boy.”

“You know I love you and the reindeer love you and it’s OK. You’re a good boy,” Santa told WOOD-TV about the chat with Landon. “You’re a good boy, you know.”

Johnson said she was incredibly moved by Santa’s thoughtful words. “This stranger in a red suit told my son the same message I’ve been trying to get through to him for a while now — that he’s special and I love him just the way he was made,” the mom told Today.com. “Seeing Landon’s face light up in that moment was just incredible. I couldn’t stop crying. He was the real Santa Claus.”

When kids hit puberty(青春期), their bodies and minds go through tons of changes, including the larynx, the voice box in the throat. The larynx is what gives you your voice. You can find your larynx by touching the front of your throat and humming. When you feel vibrations(震動) under your fingers, you’ve found it!

When the larynx grows larger during puberty, it sticks out at the front of the throat. This is what’s called an Adam’s apple. Everyone’s larynx grows during puberty, but a girl’s larynx doesn’t grow as much as a boy’s does. That’s why boys have Adam’s apples. Most girls don’t have Adam’s apples, but some do.

But why is it called an Adam’s apple? If you think it’s called that after the story of the Garden of Eden where Adam ate a piece of the forbidden fruit that got stuck in his throat, you’re right. An Adam’s apple sometimes looks like a small, rounded apple just under the skin in the front of the throat.

This larger larynx also gives boys deeper voices. Actually, girls’ voices get a little bit deeper as their larynxes get larger, too. But because boys’ larynxes grow so much more, it makes their voices deeper than girls’ voices.

The larynx doesn’t grow to its new size overnight, though. If you’ve ever heard a teenage boy’s voice sound squeaky(發(fā)短促尖叫聲的), you’ve heard a larynx trying to get adjusted to its new size!

  31. What’s mainly talked about in the text?

  A. Where an Adam’s apple exists. B. What an Adam’s apple is.

  C. When teenagers have their puberty. D. How squeaky a teenage boy’s voice sounds.

A group of kids at McIntyre Elementary School, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have created a special bench to make sure their fellow classmates aren’t left out on the playground. Called the “Buddy Bench”, students can use the seat as a safe and supportive place to let others know they’d like to be included in playtime, but may be too shy to ask.

The concept of the Buddy Bench is simple: Students who want to partake in playground games and activities, but may feel hesitant, can take a seat, which signifies(表明) to other children on the playground that they may need something extra to encourage them to participate.

The idea for the bench came about last year, when Farrell, school counselor at McIntyre Elementary, was conducting a leadership group to help students overcome shyness and gain confidence. Four fourth-grade students came up with the idea for the Buddy Bench in this workshop, and worked with Farrell to draft a letter to present to the Parent Teacher Staff Organization to make the bench a reality. The PTSO approved the students’ proposal, and installed(安裝) a bright metal bench with a cheerful sign that reads “Buddy Bench” on the school’s playground.

Since it was installed on Nov. 16, the bench has been effective. The simple concept has resonated with(引起共鳴) the students, and already has created a better environment within the school community.

“Each day, I go to see the buddy bench working,” Farrell said. “The lessons they are learning now will benefit them their entire lives. It is simply a beautiful example of kids wanting to be kind and continue to be kind every day.”

  32. Who is Buddy Bench created for?

  A. Students who love games and activities.

  B. Students who want and continue to be kind.

  C. Students who are left out on the playground.

  D. Students who are in Farrell’s leadership group.

  34. What does the word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?

  A. The PTSO. B. Buddy Bench users.

  C. The workshop members. D. Farrell and teachers.

  35. Which of the following statements can show “the bench has been effective”?
