"These aren't even that good. I think I could do better." That's one of the reasons I started writing. Because I was reading other articles and that thought came to mind. I've even thought that about books. Famous books. Brilliant books.

Who the fuck am I to think that?

  That's my ego.

  And I'm grateful for it.

Because I never would've started writing without it. I never would've found something I love to do without it. I never would've been able to quit my 9-5 without it.

  But...

Sometimes I get too caught up in it. I'll let other people's accomplishments get inside me and make me feel bad. I become jealous. I become resentful.

I let myself be tricked into think I'm not good enough, or doing enough, or being enough. That's when my ego becomes unhelpful.

I don't think having an ego is good or bad.

I think it's good and bad.

Whenever we're introduced to strangers, we make snap decisions about them according to our first impressions.

  Whether they're attractive.

Whether they seem like a decent person.

  How much they earn.

For most Brits, simply asking someone how much they're 'worth' financially is considered grossly impolite. Thankfully, most people are kind enough to drop several clanging hints about their relative wealth or successful careers. They're the ones who post on social media about flying to a meeting for work, or Snapchatting you a photo of their 'cheeky cocktail' from a beach in Tenerife. They're the ones wearing clothes with labels big enough to silently scream about how loaded they are and how well they're doing.

It's a worrying trend, and I'm not immune to it. I've felt the warm guttural glow of knowing I earned more than somebody, and the baseless grey irritation of knowing that I earn less than another. I've 'checked in' to places when I know full well that anybody reading it will either get jealous or think I'm an arse.

It seems as though self-worth is increasingly being tied to the careers we choose and the money we earn. A study in 2013, for example, found that nearly 17 percent of unemployed Americans were depressed, compared to almost six percent of those who had a permanent job.

We need to stop placing so much value on what a person earns, and putting more on what they do. Don't get me wrong - being ambitious is not a fault, and achievements should always be celebrated. But when a person uses their success to judge you negatively, it becomes a problem.

We need to stop thinking that somebody is worth admiring if they're filthy rich but stabbed everybody in the back along the way to get there. We need to consign the expression 'Nice Guys Finish Last' to the dustbin of history, by realising that being a decent person is not a sign of weakness but a positive and desirable trait.

If you want to know what you're really worth, here's a tip: It doesn't have anything to do with your bank account.

It's about how many times you've been there for your friends. It's how many times you've been kind to a stranger. It's every time you did something unselfish, or told your partner you loved them, or treated someone with respect no matter where they were in their own life.

So the next time someone boasts about their wealth, remember that they can have all the money in the world, but they can never buy their way out of being a douchebag.

Have you ever been around someone who immediately put you at ease? Perhaps you may be one of those people who others feel safe around.

What is the common thread in people who emanate warmth? Some may think it is related to personality or physical appearance. But this does little to explain why bright beacons of light can be found anywhere. Essence has nothing to do with our exterior.

I like to believe the common thread is a universal trait we are all able to tap into. When we see the truth of who we are and wholeheartedly love every part of that truth, we automatically shine. When we embrace our essence and live in congruence with who we are, we radiate peace.

Every day we can choose to wake up and see the gift of getting to be who we are. When we decide to live from this way of "being," it becomes easy to see this same light and gift in everyone — even those who may not yet see it in themselves.

The benefits of self-love are many. What I know to be true without a doubt in my heart, is that we are all capable of giving this gift to ourselves.

These words help me remember why embracing my essence is always the best thing to do. Perhaps this may resonate with where you are.

When you love who you are,

you become a conduit of light.

Just drop into your heart space,

and live life from this view.

  For all of this doing

  is not who you are.

Listen to your heart’s soft whisper,

this voice will show you the way.

  Live life from your essence

  is what she will say.

  See the light in yourself,

and your world will be bright.

There is no need to worry,

  you are exactly as you should be;

  你正是自己本來的模樣;

remember to love who you are,

  and love you will see.
