  超經(jīng)典英語詩句:Scrapbook

  Kim Addonizio

This is me, depressed out of my mind,

frailing the banjo, spilling red wine

  on the white

  king-sized

  luckily-hotel's-and-not-my-

goose down comforter, this is me

walking and waxing nostalgic through the girlish shadows

of tall palm trees, the déjà vus

  flying through the scene

  suddenly, like those three

unnameable and therefore beautiful white birds.

This is me as a slowly-tearing-itself-apart cloud

  and marveling

at a fire palely and flamily

  emerging from a bowl, wavering

up through stones of cobalt glass. The air

wavers back. This is me in love

with the beauty of blue glass in flames, this is me on drugs

  prescribed by my doctor

  as I try once more

to sneak into night's closely guarded city,

  my hollow horse ready

to wreak my demons and Blue Morphos

on the citizens of my sleep. I am most

  myself when flashing rapidly

  my iridescent wings, drinking

the juice of fallen fruit. Then again

look for me under your bed

  where the ugly premodern vampires

still hide. The undead and I are lying

in wait. We are very interested in you

though this is still me. We are unstable and true.

We believe in the one-ton rose

and the displaced toilet equally. Our blues

  assume you understand

not much, and try to be alive, just as we do,

and that it may be helpful to hold the hand

of someone as lost as you.

  超經(jīng)典英語詩句:Baby-sitting

  Gillian Clarke

I am sitting in a strange room listening

For the wrong baby. I don't love

This baby. She is sleeping a snuffly

  Roseate, bubbling sleep; she is fair;

She is a perfectly acceptable child.

I am afraid of her. If she wakes

She will hate me. She will shout

Her hot midnight rage, her nose

Will stream disgustingly and the perfume

Of her breath will fail to enchant me.

To her I will represent absolute

Abandonment. For her it will be worse

Than for the lover cold in lonely

Sheets; worse than for the woman who waits

A moment to collect her dignity

Beside the bleached bone in the terminal ward.

As she rises sobbing from the monstrous land

  Stretching for milk-familiar comforting,

She will find me and between us two

It will not come. It will not come.

  超經(jīng)典英語詩句:Stand by Me

  David St. John

When the solace of angels is named,

When the winds blister the academy,

When the first lesions of winter light

Scrawl their paths across the black sheet

Of the bed beneath the skylight,

When the algebras of my past repeat

Themselves drunkenly on into the night,

  When the lemon peels twist

At the edge of the porcelain saucer,

When the door is closed behind me,

When the stilettos all stand at attention

The moment I step onto the subway,

  When my future's looking dim,

  Stand by me

  no matter

The declensions of light along the shore,

No matter the new color of my hair,

No matter the tattoo I've solicited

In a bar fight over nothing,

No matter the earrings on the dresser top,

No matter the motion of my body against yours

  Breaking its own rainbow,

  No matter what,

  stand by me;

If some innocent misanthropy unties me

  From my new suede shoes,

If the many travellers within me all

Depart together, or if the one who's most

Rude & surly returns to you alone,

If every word I've lifted with such effort

Hangs in its residue of ash,

If there's still some consequence in this,

  Stand by me;

  after the music

Rasps its way out of my chambered bones,

After the shuffle I'm famous for is reduced

To nothing but the white tracings

  Of shoes on a sidewalk,

  Numbered 1, 2, & 3 ...

After the legato which will leave me alone,

After the third day of prolonged applause,

After the newscasters impress upon me

The transitory nature of all earthly fame,

After my make-up begins to run like

Stigmata in the shadow of the klieg lights,

After the night before the night

  You decide it really isn't

  Worth it anymore,

  stand by me;

Because the antiphony of my conscience

  Has become quite enough,

  Because you remember me believing

Whatever it was that I believed,

Because it's getting late no matter which

Country, heart or clock we consult,

Because the outfield is moving in,

Because even the women on the Pirelli

  Calendar are looking grim,

Because everyone has to forgive someone,

Because I miss you & it matters,

Because no one else wears the morning

  Quite so well, stand by me, please;

  Stand by me.
