  During the Song and Ming Dynasties,Confucian morality became fashionable.

  Many people vied with one another to imitate the poise of a moralist.

  很多人都爭(zhēng)著模仿道學(xué)家的風(fēng)度。

  There was one Confucian moralist who went to the city.On the street,he walked respectfully withmeasured strides,

  有一位道學(xué)先生進(jìn)城去,走在大路上,

  his back arched and his hands behind his back. He took every step according to the acceptedangle and length.

  弓著腰,背著手,恭恭敬敬地踱著四方步,每一步都不超過(guò)規(guī)定的角度和距離。

  As he walked and walked,he felt his back aching,and was entirely exhausted. He lookedaround,then turned to his servant and whispered:

  他走著走著,覺(jué)得腰酸背痛,疲憊不堪,左右張望一番,又回頭小聲問(wèn)仆人:

  “Take a look. Is there anyone behind?”

  The servant replied:“No.”

  At this moment,the Confucian moralist at once straightened up,heaved a sigh of relief andbegan to walk unbridledly with long strides.

  這時(shí)候,這位道學(xué)先生馬上直起腰桿,長(zhǎng)吁一口氣,跨開大步,放肆地走起路來(lái)。

  Another Confucian moralist was walking slowly on the road with measured strides,when blackclouds suddenly rolled in the sky and heavy rain began to pour.

  又有一位道學(xué)先生,正在路上慢慢地踱著四方步。突然間天空烏云翻滾,下起了傾盆大雨。

  He dashed hurriedly for over one li.All of a sudden, he exclaimed with regret:

  他慌忙奔逃,跑了一里多路。忽然,他“哎呀”一聲,后悔地說(shuō):

  “Too bad! I have erred! But a gentleman corrects his error as soon as he is aware of it, and it isnot too late yet.”

  “不好,我失誤了。君子知錯(cuò)就改,為時(shí)不晚。”

  Consequently,braving the rain,he returned to the place where he started running and began towalk slowly again,step by step with measured strides.

  Ji Zi of the Shang Dynasty was particularly fond of Taoism.

  He carried a lot of money with him and travelled around to fmd a teacher of Taoism

  Whenever he saw a man wearing a yellow cap, he would take him as a Taoist priest and kneeldown before him to ask for instructions.

  只要見(jiàn)到戴黃帽子的先生,就以為是道士,跪拜求教。

  One day,a sly swindler tried to get Ji Zi’s bag of money. He said deceitfully:

  一天,一個(gè)狡猾的騙子,企圖騙取季子的錢袋,就騙他說(shuō):

  “I am a Taoist priest with the true doctrine of Taoism.If you’ll follow me, I’ll certainly teachTaoism to you.”

  “我是一個(gè)得了真?zhèn)鞯牡朗浚灰愀以朴?,我就一定把道學(xué)傳授給你。”

  Ji Zi believed this to be true,and followed this man wholeheartedly.

  季子信以為真,誠(chéng)心誠(chéng)意地跟著他走。

  The swindler wanted all along to take action, but had no chance, while Ji Zi time and again urgedhim to teach the Taoist doctrine.

  騙子一直想下手,但是沒(méi)有機(jī)會(huì)。季子卻不時(shí)地催促他傳道。

  One day the two of them came to a river bank.At the sight of a moored boat,the swindler gotan idea and planned to take action.He said to Ji Zi:

  一天,倆人一同來(lái)到江邊。騙子一眼看到停泊的船,靈機(jī)一動(dòng),準(zhǔn)備下手,就騙季子說(shuō):

  “Taoism is right here!”

  “道就在這兒!”

  Ji Zi asked anxiously:“Where?”

  季子忙問(wèn):“在哪兒?”

  The swindler said:“It is at the top of the boat’s mast. You will learn Taoism if you climb up tothe top.”

  騙子說(shuō):“就在這條船的桅桿頂端,你爬上去就得道了。”

  Ji Zi put his bag of money under the mast,hurriedly grasped the mast and began to climb.Theswindler clapped his hands and shouted below:

  季子將錢袋放在桅桿下,急忙抓住桅桿往上爬。騙子在下面拍著巴掌,連聲喊道:

  “Up! Go further up!”

  “上!再上!”

  When Ji Zi climbed up to the top and could go no further,he suddenly saw the light.Hugging themast,he shouted happily:

  季子爬到頂端,無(wú)法再上的時(shí)候,忽然大悟,抱著桅桿歡叫:

  “I’ve learned Taoism! I’ve learned Taoism!”

  “我得道了!我得道了!”

  The swindler took this opportunity to pick up the bag of money and run away.

  騙子趁機(jī)撿起錢袋跑掉了。

  When Ji Zi came down, he kept shouting happily.The by- standers said:

  季子下來(lái)后,仍然歡叫個(gè)不停。旁觀的人說(shuō):

  “Hey, you fool, he is a swindler and has made off with your money.”

  “晦!傻瓜,他是個(gè)騙子,早把你的錢袋拿走了!”

  Ji Zi replied:“He is my master! He is my master! This is also what he is teaching me!”

  季子回答說(shuō):“他是我?guī)煾?他是我?guī)煾?這也是他在教我哪!”

  The strings of the instrument were of the same size, with no difference between the smallstrings and the large string.

  After the instrument was made. Ping Gong of Jin asked Shi Kuang, an official in charge ofmusic, to tune the instrument.

  琴制作好以后,晉平公讓樂(lè)官師曠來(lái)調(diào)音。

  Shi Kuang spent a whole day doing it, but failed to tune out a melody.

  師曠調(diào)了一整天,也沒(méi)調(diào)出個(gè)曲調(diào)來(lái)。

  Ping Gong blamed Shi Kuang for his incompetence. Shi Kuang explained:

  晉平公責(zé)怪師曠不會(huì)凋琴。師曠解釋說(shuō):

  “The large string of a musical instrument is like the king of a state, and the small strings arelike his subordinates.

  “一張琴,大弦就好比國(guó)君,小弦就好比臣子。

  The large string and the small strings have their own functions.

  大弦小弦各有各的功能,

  Only by coordinating with one another can they compose temperament, and only by beingorderly can they play harmonious and pleasant music.

  它們彼此配合,才能合成音律。大弦小弦有條不紊,才能奏出和諧悅耳的音樂(lè)。

  Now there is no difference in size between the large string and the small strings.This ruins thesystem and regularity which they should have.

  您現(xiàn)在把琴弦做成大小不分,破壞了它們應(yīng)有的系統(tǒng)性與規(guī)律性。

  How can I tune an instrument like this?”
