Overfishing Whales and the Environment
Until recently, when scientists studied changes in open-ocean ecosystems, they looked atchanges in the bottom of the food chain that gradually make their way to the top, like foodshortages and shifts in the ocean environment. A recent study, however, suggests that moreattention needs to be given to top-down influences as well.
For example, over the past few decades, there's been a major collapse of the populations ofharbor seals, fur seals, sea lions, and sea otters living on the coasts of western Alaska. Now anew study suggests that all this destruction can be traced back to humans overfishing spermand baleen whales between 1946 and 1979.
Killer whales, who live at the top of the ocean food chain, used to prey on sperm and baleenwhales. When these were no longer available, the killer whales were forced to fish farther downthe food chain. First they fed on seals, which were the easiest to catch and the mostnutritionally valuable.
Then, when seals became rare, the killer whales turned to sea lions. When the sea lionpopulation crashed, they started fishing sea otters. The domino effect reaches even farther.Without sea otters keeping sea urchins in check, their population has exploded. And they'vedestroyed the kelp forests, and with it, the kelp forest ecosystem in southwestern Alaska.
Animals switching food sources can have a very serious effect on the environment. And thatwe humans, as the ultimate predators, need to give a lot of thought to the choices we make. They may affect the food web in unintended ways.

Motional Induction
Last time, we talked about "motional induction," a phenomenon by which the ocean generatesa magnetic field.
It works like this: earth has its own magnetic field. The ocean has plenty of charged atoms init, in the form of dissolved salt. These atoms are in motion because the ocean flows.
Charged atoms moving through a magnetic field will induce an electric current. And an electriccurrent will, in turn, create another magnetic field. The ocean should generate its ownmagnetic field.
You said should. How could we know this "motional induction" is happening?
Direct evidence came in 2003 from scientists working at the University of Washington and aresearch institute in Potsdam, Germany. These researchers used a magnetometer on board anorbiting satellite.
First, they figured out what the magnetic field of the planet should be. After subtracting thisfigure, they found there was still some leftover magnetic field.
Next, the team made a computer model of what kind of magnetic field the ocean shouldgenerate through motional induction. Sure enough, their prediction matched the excessmagnetic field measured by the satellite.
The satellite also found that magneticintensity over the oceans peaked every twelve and a halfhours, but not over the land. Can you guess why?
Every twelve hours... Oh,I get it—tides!
Exactly right! The tides rise and fall every twelve and half hours, just as that extra magneticenergy swells and diminishes. This is very strong evidence that motional induction is real... andthe ocean has its own magnetism.
A long time ago, and has a small drop of water in the east china sea listening to the story of the east china sea grandpa stresses. it is aware of the east china sea using miles apart, can not be described in a vast sea, with 1000 960 high enough to describe the depth of the sea. it is very envious of the east china sea. Therefore, it asked the East China Sea grandfather: "grandpa east.
Why then has the vast East China Sea so deep? "East grandfather told it:" I also another little drop of water, I and many partners around the clock to muddy pool together a small partnership, it becomes a small stream. But we do not stop pace, the United States is continuing to pour forward, and then became rivers. Finally many rivers come together; it becomes a sea, the formation of the East China Sea. "Small drop asked: "we really have so much power? Can be turned into a stream, into a river into the sea? "East grandpa replied: "of course not! Can not become small rivers flow, so you can become the sea. Also, into the sea, do not forget the existence of small water droplets, not to overlook the power of small water droplets, but it is the source of our life! Without it, we would not. "Small drop in the east china sea remember his grandfather, finally became the famous South China Sea.
