　　晨讀美文英文：我為什么活著

　　Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life, the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

　　三種簡(jiǎn)單而強(qiáng)烈的情感支配著我的生活：對(duì)愛的渴望、對(duì)知識(shí)的追求和對(duì)受苦之人的同情?這些情感就像大風(fēng)一樣，把我隨風(fēng)卷起，飄忽不定地越過痛苦之海，來到了絕望的邊緣。

　　I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss .I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life. This is what-at last-l have found.

　　With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished Lo understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

　　Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness poverty and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

　　如果愛和知識(shí)是可能的，那么他們能帶我們到達(dá)天堂：但是人類的苦難又使我回到了人間。忍饑挨餓的孩子，被壓迫的人民，無助的老人成了孩子的負(fù)擔(dān)，還有滿世界的孤獨(dú)，貧困和痛苦對(duì)于人類生活的理想進(jìn)行了無盡的嘲弄二我想遠(yuǎn)離這個(gè)惡魔，但是我無能為力，所以也我痛苦著。

　　This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

　　However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.

　　不論你的生活如何卑賤，你要面對(duì)它生活，不要躲避它，更別用惡言咒罵它。它不像你那樣壞：你最富有的時(shí)候，倒是看似最窮。愛找缺點(diǎn)的人就是到天堂里也能找到缺點(diǎn)。

　　Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.

　　你要愛你的生活，盡管它貧窮?？旎睢⒓?dòng)和光榮的時(shí)光即使是在濟(jì)貧院里也享受得到。夕陽(yáng)照射在貧民居所的窗戶上所反射的光同照在富人公寓的窗戶上所反射的光一樣耀眼奪目，都能使得門前的積雪在早春消融。

　　I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there and have as cheering thoughts. As in a palace, the town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.

　　我只看到，一個(gè)從容的人，在哪里也像在皇宮中一樣，生活得心滿意足而富有愉快的思想。依我之見，城鎮(zhèn)的貧民倒是往往過著最獨(dú)立不羈的生活。

　　May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town, but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means, which should be more disreputable.

　　也許他們十分偉大，對(duì)任何事情皆可坦然受之。大多數(shù)人認(rèn)為他們不屑于接受城鎮(zhèn)的施救; 但是實(shí)際上他們經(jīng)常使用不誠(chéng)實(shí)的手段來維持自己的生計(jì)，這是更為不體面的。

　　Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change, we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

　　像圣賢一樣，如同栽培花園中的花草一般來培養(yǎng)貧困吧。不要自找麻煩地去追求新鮮事物，新衣物和新朋友。讓舊物常新，回歸舊物。萬物不變，是我們?cè)谧?。衣服可以賣掉，但要永存思想。
