今天我們要講的美國習(xí)慣用語是:icing on the cake.
Icing on the cake. Yippee!
例句-1:My little sister was so excited when her braces were taken off her teeth earlier than expected. Even better, she got invited to the school dance by one of the most popular boys in her class the next day. Talk about icing on the cake! She had one great thing happen on top of the other.
The icing on the cake是,他跟眼鏡店的接待員一見鐘情,沒過多久,那個(gè)接待員就成了我的舅媽。
例句-2:The baseball magazine I subscribe to ran a contest. And guess what? I received the grand prize: two tickets to the World Series. I couldn't be any luckier than if the Yankees were to win. Seeing my favorite team score another victory would be the icing on the cake!

我打了個(gè)哈欠,實(shí)在對不起,不過這和今天我們要講的美國習(xí)慣用語倒有點(diǎn)關(guān)系,這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語是:burn the candle at both ends.
所以,burn the candle at both ends這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語的意思就是過份地消耗精力或是財(cái)產(chǎn)。
I don't know how much longer I can burn the candle at both ends.
例句-1:I'm worried about my daughter. In addition to her heavy class load, she's been holding down a part-time job and training to run a marathon. Next week she's got final exams, which she's been staying up late to study for. If she keeps burning the candle at both ends, she's bound to get herself sick.
在校學(xué)生應(yīng)該勞逸結(jié)合,不能burn the candle at both ends, 否則累壞了身體,就得不償失了。
例句-2:When I was younger, I had lots of energy. I used to work all day, and then go out partying with my friends until morning without getting tired. But those days are long gone. I can no longer burn the candle at both ends.
Burn the candle at both ends,這個(gè)習(xí)慣用語可以追溯到十七世紀(jì),最初是用來指財(cái)產(chǎn)的迅速消耗。上個(gè)世紀(jì)二十年代,burn the candle at both ends又出現(xiàn)在Edna St. Vincent Millay埃德娜.
My candle burns at both ends,
It will not last the night.
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends,
It gives a lovely light.
