1971年2月25日，丹尼爾·波特出生于加拿大不列顛哥倫比亞省弗農(nóng)市的歐墾娜根(Okanagan-Shuswap)山谷地區(qū)。父親是醫(yī)生，母親是鋼琴家。
在僅四歲的時(shí)候，丹尼爾就開(kāi)始在母親的鋼琴伴奏下學(xué)習(xí)練習(xí)小提琴。天資聰慧，進(jìn)步神速的丹尼爾不久之后就可以在學(xué)校舉辦的活動(dòng)中演出，甚至10歲時(shí)就開(kāi)始嘗試作曲。 但這同時(shí)也招來(lái)了同學(xué)的嫉妒和圍攻。因?yàn)榛加袊?yán)重的誦讀困難癥，難以閱讀樂(lè)譜的丹尼爾還遭到了小提琴老師的侮辱，在這之后，丹尼爾再也沒(méi)有碰過(guò)小提琴。 在母親的影響下丹尼爾開(kāi)始試著學(xué)習(xí)鋼琴，而他也一下就為這種“能夠同時(shí)奏出多種音色”的樂(lè)器所著迷。 無(wú)法閱讀琴譜的他靠聽(tīng)力學(xué)會(huì)了彈奏鋼琴。
