1970年4月22日，美國(guó)首次舉行了聲勢(shì)浩大的“地球日”活動(dòng)，參加人數(shù)多達(dá)2000萬(wàn)。這是人類有史以來(lái)第一次規(guī)模宏大的群眾性環(huán)境保護(hù)運(yùn)動(dòng)。
