Twenty years ago, Americans were a rare sight in China. But decades later, things have changed dramatically. Americans are found in every Chinese province and region and in all walks of life. Much of this change is due to the increasing exchange and improving relationship between the two countries, but what lures many here is China’s rapid development and the huge opportunities that have arisen with that development. It is also China’s long history and diverse culture that hook so many Americans.

Erik Nilsson has been working for the English newspaper China Daily as a reporter for five years since his graduation from Central Michigan University. Although his original plan was to become a conflict zone reporter in Latin America, he decided to stay at China Daily after an internship there.

“I found China extraordinarily fascinating, so interesting and so different, and becoming more important globally. The changes here are so dramatic, and the people are very, very wonderful. Then I realized this is the place to be a reporter,” Nilsson told China Today.

Robert Brownell, a former IT engineer with Microsoft in Seattle, is now teaching in China and appreciates the different atmosphere in the school. His actions are a lot less restricted here than they would be in the U.S. “For good students, I can give them candy,” he explains. ”But in American schools, if you give food to students, they have to be sealed and airtight and tested. (In China) I can pat them on the back and raise my voice. But in America, everything is regulated so much, you just can’t do anything. So the class here is much more fun and lively.”

Apart from alluring job opportunities, China is also over-flowing with lucrative business opportunities. Kodi Keith Avila, the 30-year- old Hawaiian is running a business English school, New York Minutes, in Beijing. Avila first came to China in 2007 on a scholarship program as a student of University of Hawaii. It was encouragement from his professor that finally convinced him to go to China. “He thought China would overtake other countries in trade, consumption and technology,” Avila said.“I saw many good opportunities for personal careers or business development in China. So many limousines Audi, Mercedes-Benz, so many businessmen and skyscrapers. By providing the start-up capital and going through all necessary procedures, one can get a business license in China as long as one has a good business plan” he told China Today.

Gabrielle Marie Caponigro, aged 21, was drawn to China by her fascination with Chinese Acupuncture. She is a junior at Loyola University Maryland, and arrived in China for a Chinese language study program last September.

“I came to China because I am interested in Chinese medicine. Learning Chinese language will help me learn Chinese medicine,” Caponigro told China Today. She is not alone among Americans in becoming more and more fascinated with Chinese culture after they come to China, and this helps them settle into living and working here.

WASHINGTON---At least four more U.S. air-traffic controllers are caught nodding off on the job at three separate airports across the nation, the government said Wednesday.

The controller working alone in the tower fell asleep and was out of communication for 16 minutes while a medical flight carrying a patient was trying to land at about 2 A.M. Wednesday at Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Nevada, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.

The FAA announced that it is also investigating a controller who fell asleep Monday at Boeing King County International Airport in Seattle and two controllers who were unresponsive at Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock, Texas, on March 29.The agency had earlier revealed that an air-traffic supervisor fell asleep March 23 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and a controller slept for five hours at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee on Feb.19.

“I am sick of this,” Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Chairman Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, said in a statement. “We can’t have an aviation system where some of the people responsible for safety are asleep at the switch.”

As the incidents pile up, sleep experts say it demonstrates that the agency faces a systemic issue with the thousands of people expected to work through the night in safety-critical jobs. Scientific research shows that workers on midnight shifts make more errors because it is so difficult for the body to adapt to sleeping during the day, they say.

The agency will add an extra controller at the 27 towers staffed with one worker on the midnight shift, the FAA statement said. Agency chief Randy Babbitt and the controllers’ union president, Paul Rinaldi, will visit facilities around the country next week to reinforce the need for “the highest professional standards,” according to the FAA.

Doug Church, a spokesman for Rinaldi of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, didn’t immediately return a telephone call for comment.

Representative John Mica, the Florida Republican who chairs the House transportation committee, criticized the decision to add controllers. “Only in the federal government would you double up on workers, averaging 1,000 per year in salary and benefits, that aren’t doing their job,” Mica said in a statement. Mica has pushed legislation (立法)that would allow as many as 90 smaller airports to switch from federal to private controllers.

“People have known these problems with fatigue(疲勞)have existed for years,” said John Goglia, a Boston-based aviation safety consultant. “They’re now showing up. The FAA is admitting they exist. Now the FAA needs to work on it.”

Babbitt said April 6 a controller was in the process of being fired for deliberately sleeping on the job at the McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee, on February 19.

The four controllers in Nevada, Seattle and Texas have been suspended pending investigations, the FAA said.

50. ________ controllers since February have been caught sleeping on duty at night or early morning.

A. 4 B. 5 C. 6 D. 7

51. The underlined part “double up on workers” means ___________.

A. add two more workers B. staff two workers at a post

C. settle two workers in a double room D. give the workers double pay

A. is a known potential danger B. has never appeared before

C. is common for day-time shift workers D. seldom shows up at night

53. Which statement is true?

A. A controller fell asleep without communication for 16 minutes in Knoxville, Tennessee

B. A medical flight carrying a patient failed to land with the controller asleep.

C. Jay Rockefeller pays little attention to sleeping at the switch

D. Mica refused to support the decision to staff more controllers on the midnight shift.

54. We can infer from the passage that ____________.

A. The controllers were working alone while they were on duty

B. The incidents are rooted in fatigue problems and those on midnight shifts need an extra nap

C. In the U.S. , thousands of people expect to work through the night in safety-critical jobs

D. The agency has added an extra controller at the 27 towers

D

I was 20 years old when my mother passed away. It was the first real blow that life had dealt me, and I thought I would never recover. Then, by the time the following spring came, the pain was almost bearable and again I could find pleasure in the miraculous reward of nature.

At first, I went to the cemetery with trepidation. But then, amazingly, by tending her grave and decorating it with flowers, I was ridding myself of the painful memories.

The years passed. I moved from Kaposvar, Hungary, the town where I had been born and had spent my youth. So did my siblings. We only came together on feast days, especially on All Souls’ Day in the cemetery.

Father lived with me for many years, to a ripe old age. Now that he, too, rests beneath the white marble stone, I go even more eagerly to the cemetery. While I tend my parents’ grave site, again I am with them in thought.

One day I noticed a modest grave site behind my parents’ plot. It lay among the magnificent granite and marble markers of the other graves, its very simplicity calling attention to itself. Ivy(長春藤) had covered the site and its only decoration was a simple wooden cross on which was written in copper letters a name, and that she lived 22 years. Whenever I went by, the plot and its surroundings looked cared for and neat, and each time I felt curious about this mysterious woman who had lived all of 22 years.

Once I saw an elderly man leaving from there. I concluded that perhaps he had come to visit his wife. In 1996 I was preparing for All Souls’ Day in the cemetery when again I caught sight of him, tending the grave. Tall, somewhat bent, he was well passed middle age. We nodded to each other and continued our work. Occasionally I stole a glance at my neighbor. When I noticed that he hadn’t got the tools for a proper cleanup, I offered him mine, which he gratefully accepted. After this, it seemed only natural to engage him in conversation. I asked him whose grave it was. This was his answer:

“My mother’s. She died young, in 1912 when I was only a year-and-a half old. I really never knew her. I made her that cross and the copper letters.”

Then he went on:” No one comes to visit this grave but me because I was her only child. She died of pneumonia. My father remarried and my stepmother only cared for her own children. So then I always came here to my mother, whether in sadness or in joy. Later, life took me far afield, but I never forgot this grave. For me it was the same as the family home is for others. I always came home here.”

“With the years passing, it is getting more difficult for me to come, but as long as my legs will carry me, at least twice a year I visit my mother. I’m in my 80s. so who knows how long I can still make it.’

In stunned silence I listened. Tears clouded my eyes as I realized that I had never seen such boundless love. How much easier is my lot, I thought, for at any moment I can reach into my storehouse of memories and draw out the joyful or sad vignettes(小插圖) that bind me to my parents with a thousand threads. What memories might this kindly old gentleman harbor? Perhaps a face from an ancient faded photograph of his mother.

What a great attachment throughout his long life must have led him back again and again to the resting place of that young woman whose motherly love he could never truly savor(嘗到), only forever feels its enormous lack.

We said good-bye. I was deeply moved because I knew that I had been given a great gift. I had been allowed a glimpse of the royal and long-lasting affection that bound a simple and noble-hearted man to his mother. I decided I would tend the grave together with that of my parents, where, finally, the aged child will have met his youthful mother.

A. A Platform to Express Personal Opinions

B. Two Sides to Every Coin

C. Solving Problems All Together

D. A New Way to Access Information

E. All There to Share

F. Changing Ways of Communication

Weibo, Changing Our Lives

In August of 2009, the popular news and entertainment website Sina.com.cn launched a test version of ‘Sina Weibo”, becoming one of the first mainland web companies to experiment with a micro-blogging service. According to statistics from the CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center), by the first half of 2011, the number of Weibo users had reached 195 million,

and this figure continues to grow.

61. ____________

In comparison to other social networking services such as SNS, BBS and Blog, Weibo offers a more streamlined, live-to –the-minute service and covers a greater range of subject matter.

On Dec. 1,2010 a website malfunction occurred and Weibo was unavailable for four hours. Users were predictably frustrated. One daily newspaper conducted a survey through its own Weibo account on the question, ”What did you do in those four hours?” Some answers read,” I couldn’t function normally, life if dull without Weibo.” or “All I did for those four hours was keep refreshing the browser window. I can’t live without Weibo.” or” During the breakdown I was just really bored.”

62.__________

In China, people working in traditional media are more and more often accessing information via Weibo. A study into Chinese reporter’s working habits revealed that 47.7 percent of them use Weibo frequently, and more than 60 percent have used social media for clues about news, researching topics or even for interviews.

“On Weibo, the reading environment, rhythm of prose and issues of continuity between topics can all be done away with in favor of the raw message.” said Neweekly magazine chief commentator Linhu Lei.

63.___________

“ Weibo, as a form of ‘personal media’, functions as a tool for the expression of personal opinions to the society that surround us and encourages like –minded individuals to share thoughts on topics of mutual interest. This fosters a diversity of opinion and encourages information transparency, all the while building up a public platform for the pursuit of truth. In this sense, Weibo promotes a more democratic and open society,” Yu Guoming remarked.

64.__________

As Weibo has developed over the past two years, people have begun to discuss a more diverse range of topics rather than just giving simple statements about their day. These days, job opportunities and medical advice can be found through the service and groups provide a place for marketing and even for policymakers to discuss policies. There are, however, rumors, rude remarks and irrational behavior are all amplified on Weibo. Weibo can be taken advantage of by those seeking an easy buck through a scam or by someone looking to spread a rumor to sabotage a business competitor.

65._________

On July 29,2009 Twitter’s inaugural invitation to tweeters. “Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world” replaced the original , “What are you doing?” This pioneering micro-blogging service has gone on to change the way people communicate. Weibo has changed the nature of people’s interaction with the information they obtain, and internet users have since discovered that they can make their voices heard far and wide.

In the summer when I want to relax, I go down to the river at the edge of our village. There is a deep pond there and all the village children met in hot weather to swim. The tall trees among the river bank give us a shade when we just want to sit and talk and the sandy river bank is perfect for the little children to play. On the opposite river bank are some large rocks on which we older children swim when we want to sunbathe. The river flows slow and the water is crystal clear. The air smells of trees and damp earth and my worries begin to appear as I arrive.

Sometimes on warm evenings we take food or drink down to the river. That is very pleasant to sit with friends and watching the night fall. I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be on a summer evening.

(英語)答案

參考范文 (129 words)

Dear Marty,

Thank you for writing to me. Your letter touched a warm spot in my heart.

I’m surprised to learn there is a wide gap between rich and poor among you students. It is obviously wrong for that guy to put you to shame rudely.

I assume some students have more money than others, but this should not affect their behavior. There’re many ways of being rich if we can enjoy lives and find peace within ourselves. Being “rich” or “poor” will prove to be temporary especially in a rapidly changing society. Material wealth vanishes more quickly than it comes.

Try to ignore their arrogance. Do better than they can in spite of their money. Maybe you can be richer than they are in grades and behavior. Your faith in yourself and ability will be your riches and your reward will be greater than theirs.

Try it.

With warm regards and best wishes.

Bob
