Text 10
Mr Brown was tired of living in the big city where he worked. He wanted to move to the country and live in a house from which he could get to his office in the city early every day. He was looking for a house until he saw an ad in a newspaper one day. The ad said that a suitable house in a quiet area was up for sale at a reasonable price, and the house was within a stone's throw of a railway station from which there were frequent trains to the big city.
“That's exactly what I need,”Mr Brown said to himself. So he called the house agency and arranged to go down by train the next day to have a look at the house.
The house agency met him at the station and they started walking. It took them at least 15 minutes to get to the house. When they reached, Mr Brown said angrily,“I should be very interested to meet the man who threw the stone you mentioned in the newspaper.”

True friends double your happiness and half your burdens. Basically how you would like a true friend to be is what you should be like to your true friends. Trust, forgiveness, responsibility are some elements of a true friendship.
True friendships are hard to achieve. And what's more, life is short. So treasure these friends if you already have them. If you don't continue to search, because once you have them, life will become so much easier to live, no matter what happens. I have been through very difficult times and I dare say, without my friends, I would not have made it. Friendships need lots of energy and patience to maintain them. Not to mention time. When your friend needs you, and when things are not going too well on your side, it is often so easy to turn_a_deaf_ear_to their requests. It is especially during these times that you must find the strength to help your friend.
And it is during these times that your friendship will be made stronger. And you must always be happy for their successes, even when things are not going too well for you. It might be hard to do this, but it is something that you need to learn.
Think about all the sacrifices your friend has made for you and all the times when he was happy for you despite his own troubles. Think about all the happy times you enjoyed and the sad, difficult times you went through together. That should give you plenty of patience to actually be a true friend. Remember: true friends are the next best thing to family. They will always be your supporters.
21.What is the best title for this passage?
A. A precious friendship.
B. A true friend.
C. A happy time.
D. Friend, a treasure.

A part-time job can build kids' skills, make good use of their spare time, and fill their pockets. But before your teen goes to work, here's what you both need to know to avoid any accidents.
Do your homework. Before your teen says “yes” to a job, find out as much as you can about the possible employer and the workplace. For example, if it's a restaurant, stop in for dinner or lunch; if it's a supermarket, shop there sometimes. Take note of how the manager treats the employees and whether safety measures(安全措施) are being followed.
Know the laws. Explain laws to your teen so he will know if he is asked to do anything unsuitable (like working beyond allowed hours). Go to youthrules. dol. gov/states. htm for more information.
Set up your own rules. Don't just rely on the law. You may need to be stricter. Even if it's legal for your teen to work until 7 p.m. on a school night, for example, you may want him home by 6 p.m. so he's not driving after dark.
________. Your teen may not tell you how things are going—you'll have to pull it out of him.“How was work today?” is likely to produce a meaningless answer “Fine”. Instead, ask, “Does the manager ever ask you to work after you clock out?” Or,“How closely does your manager watch to make sure you do things the right way?” You need to know whether a kid who was hired to do something innocuous has been asked to do something risky. Sad stories are often heard from parents who say,“When my teen got this job, she was hired as an assistant waiter. I didn't know they'd put her in the back using a slicing machine(切片機(jī))”.
25.For whom is the text mainly written?

26.Which of the following is the most suitable to fill in the blank?

27.The underlined word “innocuous” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.
A. safe B. tiring
C. interesting D. difficult
28.What is the text mainly about?
A. Relations between parents and kids.
B. Laws protecting teenage laborers.
C. How to choose a part-time job.
D. How to keep teens safe at work.
C
One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?
Listen—Listen when your friends are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them—If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them—Be there for your friends to make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said,“I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!
________—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to the movies and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you'll remember these things when you're all old!
29.When we provide help for our friends, we should ________.
A. try to do everything for them

D. ignore their faults
You should try to put them first可知。
30.What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe's words?
A. Life without a friend is death.
B. A friend is easier lost than found.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D. A man is known by his friends.
If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!可知。
31.Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph?
A. Make plans
B. Enjoy yourself
C. Understand your friends
D. Play with your friends
Try to make plans with your friends.可知。
32.The passage is mainly about ________.
A. how to find a good friend
B. how to help friends in trouble
C. how to be a good friend
D. how to make more friends
In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?可知。
D
You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It's the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart's music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.
The_idea_took_off,_ with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart's music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them produce better milk.
I'll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn't make us more intelligent.
33.Why did many people believe in the idea of the Mozart effect?
A.Because a study described it in the journal Nature.
B.Because Mozart himself was a genius.
C.Because Mozart's music is enjoyable.
D.Because Mozart's music makes people relaxed.
Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself;his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we'll become more intelligent.
34.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggests that ________.
A.people were strongly against the idea
B.the idea was accepted by many people
C.Mozart played an important part in people's life
D.the US government helped promote the idea
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children,很多父母給孩子聽(tīng)莫扎特的音樂(lè),可知這句話(huà)表明這種想法被許多人接受,故選B項(xiàng)。
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Listening to Mozart, necessary?
B.What music is beneficial?
C.What is the Mozart effect?
D.To be or not to be?
