On a warm day in 2050, Frank and Mary Smith wake up in their comfortable house and turn on the computer in their bedroom to get the latest (最新的) news. They used to read The Guardian, but changed to electronic (電子的) newspapers many years ago.
Frank first reads some news about space: another space flight has returned from Mars. Then they turn to sport news. As they watch the screen, Mary pays for a robot to make coffee for them.

She picks up the video phone to talk to her assistant (助理). Mary also has a job and she is doing medical research. Both she and Frank used to have office jobs in London, but in 2040 they decided to move to the seaside and work from home.
Frank and Mary have one daughter, Louise. She goes to school only one day a week, mainly to play with other students. Classrooms disappeared in 2035 because there was no longer any need for them: the Internet had made it much easier to learn at home.
Louise, now thirteen, is studying Chinese at present, which has become a world language as important as English. Louise has many Chinese friends. They share many things online.

Dear Mr. Miller,
Recently I had a discussion about ways to learn English with my classmate Joe. In his opinion, the best ways to learn English are by reading English newspapers and by talking with friends in English. He also believes that watching English films isn’t a bad way.
However, I think we can find some English articles to read by searching on the Internet. Also, we can find some pen pals from English-speaking countries so that we can improve our English by writing e-mails to them. Finally, joining an English club is also a great help.
What’s your opinion? Please write to me.
Best wishes,
Tony
