China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

It was Mother’s Day morning last year and I was doing my shopping at our local supermarket with my five-year-old son, Tenyson. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock.
Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”
At the front of the supermarket, a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”
By now paramedics(急救人員) had arrived, and were attending to the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.
Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”
At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”
The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.

Subject:Office rental
Marilyn,
Here's a link to an office rental ad I found online:www.offices.com/10-01. I think it's worth looking at even though the rent is a bit high. I know it is a good deal more than we are paying now, but look at the size. It's twice as big as our current office, and I'm sure we can use the space. And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately it is nowhere near a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office. I'm sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I'm really tired of using the stairs. I'd like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Try and get one for tomorrow if you can, because after that I'll be away until next Monday, as you know. Thanks.
Paul
9. How much would Marilyn and Paul have to pay before moving into the advertised office?
A. $900.
B. $1,750.
C. $1,800.
D. $3,500.
10. What does the advertised office have that the current office doesn't?
A. A kitchen.
B. A bathroom.
C. A parking area.
D. A reception area.
11. When does Paul want to see the office?
A. Monday.
B. Tuesday.
C. Wednesday.
D. Thursday.

Stephen William Hawking(1942.1-2018.3), was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. Having spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, he was urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake. The 76-year-old Hawking once said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile(脆弱的)planet.”
The scientist made the remarks before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Hawking was diagnosed (診斷) with the neurological disorder 55 years ago while studying at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depressed and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his PhD. But he continued to devote himself to his studies.
“If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,” he said. Famous for his work on black holes and the origins of the universe, Hawking was also well-known for bringing abstract physics concepts to the masses through his best-selling books.
Hawking survived longer than most people with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord(脊髓) that control the muscles. People gradually have more and more trouble breathing and moving as muscles weaken and waste away. There’s no cure and no way to reverse (倒轉(zhuǎn)) the disease’s progression. Few people with ALS live longer than a decade.
Hawking received around-the-clock care, could only communicate by twitching his cheek, and relied on a computer mounted to his wheelchair to convey his thoughts in a unique robotic monotone.
Despite his diagnosis, Hawking remained active. In 2007, he floated like an astronaut on an aircraft that created weightlessness by making parabolic(拋物線) dives. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do.” he said.
12. Why did Hawking remark that humans will not survive another 1,000 years?
A. To warn the earth may not be suitable to live on.
B. To make his theory on cosmology widely accepted.
C. To show the earth is becoming more and more fragile.
D. To persuade human beings to further space exploration.
13. What must human beings do if they want to survive according to Hawking?
A. Study the universe without stop.
B. Escape possible future disasters.
C. Realize the way the universe works.
D. Protect the environment of the earth.
14. What if a person suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease?
A. They will be unable to walk or speak to others.
B. They are likely to die within ten years generally.
C. They can recover a little bit if they are treated early.
D. They are mostly assisted by especially-designed robots
15. What do Hawking’s achievements in science lie in?
A. His interest in physics.
B. His creation of black holes. .
C. His research on the universe.
D.His strong will against disease.

Eyesight plays a very important role in our daily life. Every waking moment, the eyes are working to see the world around us. Over forty percent of Americans worry about losing eyesight, but it's easy to include steps into our daily life to ensure healthy eyes. Here are five suggestions for a lifetime of healthy eyesight:
● Schedule yearly exams. 16 Experts advise parents to bring babies 6 to 12 months of age to the doctor for a careful check. The good news is that millions of children now can have yearly eye exams and following treatment, including eyeglasses.
● Protect against UV rays (紫外線). Long-term stay in the sun creates risk to your eyes. No matter what the season is, it's extremely important to wear sunglasses. 17 .
● Give your eyes a break. Two-thirds of Americans spend up to seven hours a day using computers or other digital products. 18 . Experts recommend that people practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
● 19 As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins (維生素) C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health.
● Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses (隱形眼鏡). Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. While some follow the medical guidance for wearing contact lenses, many are breaking the rules and putting their eyesight at risk. 20 . Otherwise, you may have problems such as red eyes, pain in the eyes, or a more serious condition.
A. Eat your greens.
B. Eye care should begin early in life.
C. They can properly protect your eyes.

I'm so glad to hear that you are coming to China at the beginning of June. I'd like to recommend Qingdao and Mount Min as sights to see while you are here.
Qingdao is one of the most beautiful coastal cities in China and a wonderful place to spend summer. The climate there is very mild and can make you feel very relaxed and comfortable. Tens of thousands of people from all around the world visit this city every summer.
The other is Mount Min. It is famous for its beautiful scenery and long history. There are many old famous temples there. If you are interested in climbing mountains and visiting temples, it is definitely worth seeing.
As for the cost, a five-day tour around Qingdao may cost you 1000 yuan, while a four-day tour of Mount Min could cost around 800 yuan. Both of these places are well worth visiting and I highly recommend them. I hope you have a good trip!

A 9-year-old boy in Indian stopped a would-be carjacker(劫車賊)on Christmas Day from running away with his father’s truck.
Kevin Cooksey was inside the One Stop Express gas station in Kokomo buying medicine for his wife when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of his truck. Cooksey had left the engine running and the door unlocked.
“When I saw my truck door open, I was astonished, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’” Cooksey said.
His son, Larry, was sitting in the back seat. “As soon as he opened the door, I got frightened,” said Larry. “So I pulled out the gun and pointed it to his head.”
This was enough to make the carjacker think twice and he jumped out of the truck to try another car. Parked beside Cooksey’s truck was Kyle Sparling’s black Trailblazer. He too had left the engine running as he went into the store. The man got in Sparling’s SUV and took off.
“I didn’t know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him,” said Sparling.
As the man sped off, Cooksey told Sparling to get into his truck and the two men began to run after him. The icy winter conditions made the driving difficult, but the pair followed at a safe distance as the carjacker drove in a “Z” way. After a few miles, the carjacker knocked into the sign of a local business, American Tool and Party Rental. Cooksey and Sparling called the police to the place.
The police put 32-year-old Ollie Dunn into prison. Sparling’s car was damaged in the wheel, and the windscreen got cracked after the sign fell on it. “I was just glad he didn’t knock into anybody,” Sparling said. “That was my biggest fear, I think.”

26. What ended the carjacker’s escape?

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a way to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let illnesses in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus it began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children of touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫學(xué)家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
28. The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because________.
A. they believed disease could be spread in public baths
B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in
C. they lived healthily in a dirty environment
D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease
29. The underlined word“merit”in paragraph 3 means________.
A. weakness B. influence C. strength D. feature
30. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By providing examples.
B. By following the order of importance.
C. By following the order of time.
D. By making comparisons.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
B. To stress the role of dirt.
C. To introduce the history of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.
D
We humans spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This may sound like a lot of time, but it is not wasted. Sleep not only helps us stay healthy but it also helps our brains remember. Our brains need good sleep to remember what we do and learn during the other two thirds of our lives when we are awake.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that sleep helps improve brain performance by shrinking(收縮)synapses in the brain. A synapse is the area where cells pass messages to other cells.
Scientist Chiara Cirelli is a leader at the school’s Center for Sleep and Consciousness. She told the reporter that sleep is when the human brain mixes information it has learned while awake into its general collection of knowledge. Meanwhile, the brain forgets unimportant details. This forgetting is important. It makes space for new learning and new memories.
Cirelli said that the Centers research began with this hypothesis(假設(shè)): We sleep so that our brain can repair and refresh itself. She said the idea seems simple and reasonable. However, testing and discovering how it works has been extremely difficult.
Synapses are only about 20-40 nanometers(納米)wide. The team began their study by measuring the size of the synapses to look for changes in these already tiny spaces between nerve cells. Cirelli says the process(過程) is difficult because“all the actual measurements of the synapses have to be done by hand.” The team had to wait until improvements in laboratory technology made it possible to see these tiny changes. A University of Wisconsin press release called the research a“huge job.” Many research specialists worked for four years to photograph, rebuild and study certain areas of a mouse brain. The report also said the scientists measured 6,920 synapses.
Cirelli says they found that our synapses shrink as our brains clean themselves during sleep. We wake up refreshed and ready to fill those synapses with new information. The research findings are the result of years of hard work at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The researchers published their findings in the journal Science.
32. How does the brain help improve our memory while we are sleep?
A. By not forgetting any learnt knowledge.
B. By keeping learning new information.
C. By adding new knowledge to its old collection.
D. By repeating information learnt before.
33. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The size for the synapses.
B. The difficulties in the measuring work.
C. The preparations for the measuring work.
D. The result of the measuring work.
34. What can we infer about the research work?
A. The synapses were found bigger after a good night’s sleep.
B. The findings proved their hypothesis was right.
C. The team began their research as soon as they decided to.
D. The researchers carried out their work with a human brain.
35. What is the result of the research?
A. Sleep helps us keep healthy.
B. Sleep takes one-third of our lifetime.
C. Sleep helps the brain shrink.
D. Sleep helps us learn better.

Winter is a really fun time of the year—it’s great to have snowball fights and build snowmen. 36 When it’s cold outside and you’re not prepared, you can feel uncomfortable. Lucky for you, learning how to stay safe is not difficult.
37 Wearing thick clothes is the best way to stay warm in the cold. Depending on where you live and how cold it is, some kids may need more clothes, some less.
Take that hat. You maybe wear a large overcoat and ready to go, but are you forgetting something? 38 You’ll stay much warmer with a hat than without one—tons of body heat escapes right from your head.
Drink up. Sounds like advice for hot weather, not cold weather, right? 39 When you’re outside in the cold and breathing hard, your body loses a lot of water through your breath. And the best way to get that water back is to drink up!
Take it easy. Sometimes if you’re out having fun, it’s easy to forget to pay attention to your body. But if your body temperature drops even 4 or 5 degrees while you’re outside, it can make you feel terrible. 40 And if you ever feel weak, those are signs that you have to take it easy indoors for a while.
A. Have a snowball fight.
B. Pull a hat onto your head.
C. Well, the truth is that it’s good advice for both kinds of weather.
D. Love those clothes.
E. But you have to know how to be safe while you’re out having fun.
F. You can stay outside as long as possible to fully enjoy your snow days.
G. That’s why you need to be careful with your body’s signals.

Text 6
M: Good morning, Sue! How is your holiday? Did you enjoy it?
W: Yes, I had a great time. I went to Inner Mongolia with some of my friends. We went mountain climbing near Baotou, and we stayed in a tent at night and cooked meals over an open fire.
M: Sounds cool! Did you like the people there?
W: Yes, they were nice. We met some farmers and they invited us to have tea in their house.
M: What an interesting experience!
Text 7
W: Excuse me. We’re making a survey. Would you like to answer some questions?
M: Sure.
W: Well, how much pocket money you get from your parents every month?
M: About 50 dollars.
W: Do you get pocket money in other ways?
M: Yes. Most of my friends take part-time jobs to get pocket money. So do I. I look after my neighbor’s baby every Friday evening. They pay me 12 dollars an hour. So I can get 48 dollars from them every week.
W: Then, how do you usually spend your pocket money?
M: Well, I buy books for my study and sometimes I buy some CDs..
W: What a nice young man! Thank you for talking with us.

M: Cindy! I never imagined meeting you here! It’s been nearly three years since we left St. Matthew’s Primary School, hasn’t it?
W: Yeah. Time flies. How is your middle school life?
M: It’s great! I’m in Stowe Middle School and I’m a member of its theater group.
W: Really? The theater group is quite popular. It puts on very great plays and musicals.
M: Thanks. We have to practise very hard for every show. But I like it and it’s also great fun to go to the theater frequently and enjoy plays by famous artists.
W: Wow, that’s wonderful! I’m afraid it’s time for the film. Let’s go inside to see the film first.
Text 9
M: Lily, where do you like to eat?
W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It’s very near the city center. At lunch it’s full of office workers, but I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don’t have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What’s your favorite restaurant?
M: Well, it’s just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. Some truck drivers drink coffee and eat sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don’t think that’s true.

Good morning, everyone. This is Helen Green with What to Do Today on the air. It’s quite a warm and sunny Saturday. Now, if you’ve got nothing to do today, why not go to East Mountain in the city and get digging? That’s the message from Sussex Middle School. It is organizing a tree-planting activity in East Mountain.
Sussex Middle School is a member of the organization of Helping Blind Children. It is raising money for poor blind children in Asia by planting trees. Students and their parents are hoping to plant a half today. They are looking for volunteers to come along and help. Tree-planting experience is not necessary because there will be experts to give instructions. Thick gloves will be provided to protect your hands when you are doing the digging. There’re also hats provided. And please do bring basic tools with you to dig holes and water trees. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend. Bridge of Hope School is a private school. It was set up in Kalangala about two years ago. Unlike government schools, which have very large classes of 90 children, many of whom do not want to learn, Bridge has small classes, so pupils get a great deal of attention. Have you heard of a napping (打盹) company? A Spanish company has opened the first public napping space in M adrid. Siesta & Go promises the Spanish people a quiet and restful getaway in the city’s business center.
Napping spaces are already nothing new places in other big cities in the world. But the idea would appear to work well with the culture of Spain, where people traditionally take a midday nap.
The Madrid nap bar recently opened with 19 beds. They can be rented by the minute or by the hour. People can choose either a private or shared room. An hour of napping time inside a private room costs about $ 15.
The company also offers areas to work, as well as armchairs, newspapers and coffee for those not wishing to sleep. Philip Marco is one happy customer. He says he gets tired during the day because he has a long drive to work. He says the midday nap is the perfect way to build up energy. “I come for about 30 minutes, something like that. Sleeping for 30 minutes usually is enough for me to be able to get throu gh the evening.”
Siesta & Go provides all bedding, clean nightshirts and other materials. Nappers can request to be woken up when their time is up.
While many Spanish people love their midday naps, others like Carlos Villarroja say they are just too busy to keep this tradition. “It’s a Spanish tradition, but I think it’s more of an impractical thing than a tradition. Because with the lifestyle we have the working hours, we have very little free time for a nap, in my case, at least during the week.”

We all know the saying, “Nobody is perfect.” It has been planted in our brains since we were children, and of course, it is the truth. So if nobody is perfect, why do we have such a hard time admitting when we are in trouble or need help?
Like many other young people trying to get through their first year of college, I felt anxious, and it had its grips on me pretty tight. It began getting in the way(妨礙) of my life, and I had to sit down and tell myself that my behavior was not healthy and there was a sol ution. Finally, I decided to turn to therapy(精神療法).
Therapy. It has such a negative stigma (污名), but why? Does going to therapy mean that you are failing as a person or that you cannot fix your prob lems on your own? No. Going to therapy means that you are strong enough to recognize that something inside your head is not working correctly, and you are brave enough to try to solve it.
After a couple of weeks, many parts of my life became so much clearer. I began to understand that I, myself, am my worst enemy, which was pretty frightening. But, although frightened, I knew that it was only I who could guide me towards feeling better, and that was extremely empowering.
I have been guid ed towards a healthier mindset, one that is positive and powerful. I have been able to understand that no matter what happens in my life. I will always be okay.
A lot of people do not understand that it is normal to have negative feelings and sometimes to feel like we have lost control over certain parts of our lives. Seeing a therapist can greatly change your way of thinking about something if you keep your mind open and I am so thankful that I decided to go and do something for myself.
So,if you are in need of help, you can go to therapy and then everything will be okay.

第二節(jié) 書面表達
Dear Henry,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to tell you something about fast food in China.
Fast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers.
There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. Second, the environment of fast food restaurant is both clean and comfortable. Third, it has excellent service, and the quality of food is guaranteed.
However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from perfect to satisfy the children’s need. It doesn’t offer enough fiber and body-building and energy-giving food. Because it is usually not a balanced diet.
As far as I am concerned, fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry. It’s good for people, especially children, to eat fast food as little as possible.
Thanks for your kindness.
Yours,
