Are you so sure your mistakes are just mistakes? Or could they be building blocks to a success beyond any you imagined?

When my friend Dorothy goes home to visit her family each Thanksgiving, her mother serves the traditional “mistake salad”. The dish was born many years ago, Dorothy explains, when mother was using a cookbook to make a salad. In the process, by mistake, mother included half the salad ingredients (原料) from a recipe (食譜) on the left side of the open cookbook, and half the ingredients from a different salad recipe on the opposite page. Everyone enjoyed the salad so much that she continued to serve it every year. So it was really not a mistake at all.

Then there was the man named Alfred, who invented dynamite (炸藥). When Alfred’s brother died, the city newspaper mistook his brother for him, saying in the news that the dead’s most famous act was the creation of bombs (炸彈). Surprised to consider that his name would forever be connected with destruction, Alfred wanted to leave a more positive impression on people. So he set a prize for people who made contributions to world peace. Now the Nobel Prize, set up by Alfred Nobel, is the most respected prize in the world.

Everything is part of something bigger, and so are mistakes. In his brilliant book Illusions, Richard Bach explains that every problem comes to you with a gift. If you only fix your attention on what went wrong, you miss the gift. If you are willing to look deeper and ask for the bright, the problem will disappear. You are left only with the learning, and you go forward on your path.

  19. What’s the aim of the questions at the beginning of the passage?

  A. To ask for answers.

  B. To introduce the topic.

  C. To show everyone will make mistakes.

  D. To warn people not to make mistakes.

  20. What should we do when we make a mistake according to the passage?

  A. Try to miss the gift.

  B. Learn from the mistake.

  C. Try making more mistakes.

  D. Fix our attention on what went wrong.

  21. What is the main idea of this passage?

  A. Mistakes will lead to success.

  B. Delicious dishes come from mistakes.

  C. Mistakes are also part of something bigger.

  D. The setting up of the Nobel Prize was a mistake.

  C

When it comes to generation gap (代溝), we usually think of different tastes in music, or pastimes. But now the generation gap is handwriting. After one teacher in Tennessee discovered that she had students who couldn’t read what she was writing on the board, she posted it on the Internet saying that handwriting should be taught in schools.

Others who are against it claim that handwriting has become out of time in our modern world. Typed words have become a main form of communication. Once a practical skill, handwriting is no longer used by most of Americans. It is no longer taught in schools, and some claim that the time that it would take to teach it could be put to better use, for example, by teaching the technical skills.

But even in today’s world there are still plenty of reasons to pick up a pen and write on the paper. In America, signatures (簽字) by hand are still often required, for example, signing for a registered letter and buying a house. And original signatures are much more difficult to fake (偽造).

There is also strong evidence that writing by hand is good for the mind. It makes a different part of the brain active and improves fine moving skills in young children. People are also more likely to remember what they write by hand than what they type, and the process of writing by hand has been shown to stimulate ideas. Not only those, studies have shown that kids who write by hand learn to read and spell earlier than those who don’t.

Yes, we live in a modern world, but we live in a modern world of basic and important values.

  22. What did the teacher find in her class?

  A. Her students were too lazy to follow her class.

  B. Her handwriting was too terrible to understand.

  C. There was something wrong with some students, eyes.

  D. Some students could not recognize her written words on the board.

  23. Some people are against handwriting teaching because they think .

  A. handwriting is a practical skill

  B. handwriting is no longer popular

  C. it’s difficult to fake typed signatures

  D. handwriting is no longer used by Americans

  24. How many advantages does handwriting have for the mind?

  A. 3. B. 4. C. 7. D. 8.

  25. The underlined word “stimulate” in Paragraph 4 probably means .

  A. cause B. collect C. exchange D. influence

  Drive in different conditions

In order for your teen to become a good driver, he or she has to practice driving in different conditions. 30

  My Unforgettable Experience

During last summer holidays, in order to do something meaningful instead of staying at home, I got a job at a fast food restaurant as a cleaner. I worked eight hours a day for four weeks.

Every day I started off for work early in the morning and got home late in the evening. The job was hard and boring and seemed endless, which made me so tired that I nearly gave it up half way. However, I finished it with determination. Although I met with a lot of difficulty in the work, it helped me understand better what labor means. I think it’s really an unforgettable experience.

I wonder if there's any kids at my school that need help paying their lunches,’” said her mother ,Rachel Van Hill.

Amiah, 6, and Aria, 4, discovered that at Hayden Meadows Elementary School in Idaho, the unpaid lunch debt was $40.55. They set up a lemonade stand last month to raise the money, with a sign reading, “Lemonade 4 Lunch.” During their first set-up, the two met their goal within an hour.

The school was very much appreciative. Principal Lisa Pica said “Our school believes in giving back to the community and we are excited that Amiah has got that value at such a young age and we are so proud that she has found a way to help those in need. She is a very special little lady.”

After discovering it was “easy” to pay off one school’s debt, they set up another lemonade stand a week later to raise money for two more local schools. The girls then decided to set their sights higher and raise funds for the entire Coeur d’Alene Public School district. In 22 days, they’ve raised more than $2,700. The school district is excited to recognize her for her good deed.

I study English literature at university and have always ben proud of Britain’s literary heritage(文學遺產). Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.

I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.

Classic novels usually have memorable stories land interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean. Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.

Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.

  28. Why are some novels called “classic”?

  A. They stand the test of time.

  B. They are taught at universities.

  C. They are written by famous authors.

  D. They are translated into many languages.

  29. Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2?

  A. To introduce the university lessons.

  B. To remind people of the poverty in London.

  C. To let people know about what family life was like.

  D. To prove classic novels help people know the past.

  30. What can we know about the character Miss Havisham?

  A. She is selfish and mean.

  B. She lives an unhappy life.

  C. She loves wedding dresses most.

  D. She becomes rich with others’ support.

  31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

  A. Why I like classic novels

  B. Why some novels are classic

  C. How to read classic novels

  D. How to teach classic novels

A new study suggests that people who drank a certain amount of alcohol(酒)had a lower risk of cancer and death than those who drank more or none during a nine-year period. And with each additional drink a week, the risk of cancer and death from any cause increased, the scientists reported.

However, the study found only an association between alcohol and cancer and death, and did not prove cause and effect, the researches said. What sets the new study apart, said lead study author Andrew Kunzmann, is that previous studies looked at cancer and death separately. “What our study does is combine the two outcomes together and we find that lighter drinking is associated with the lowest risk of cancer or death,” Kunzmann said.

But Kunzmann noted that the participants(參與者)were all older adults. That means that “we’re not really showing what happens in younger people if they drink,” he said. Also, it’s difficult to account for other lifestyles that could have affected the results. “These could also influence health. But the results did take into consideration differences in diet, smoking and education among participants,” Kunzmann noted.

The researchers said that they hope their study sparks conversation about reducing the suggested alcohol intake in countries’ guidelines. “We’re not telling people what they can or can’t do or what they can or can’t drink,” Kunzmann said. “We’re just trying to give them reliable evidence so that they can make their own informed, healthy decisions.”

  32. What is the finding of the new study?

  A. Nondrinkers are least likely to have cancer.

  B. Drinking helps lower the risk of cancer.

  C. Lighter drinking is helpful to health.

  D. Heavy drinkers are at more risk.

  33. Which of the following best explains “previous” underlined in Paragraph 2?

  A. Future. B. Present. C. New. D. Former.

  34. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?

  A. The result is of little value.

  B. The research has its limitations.

  C. The participants are all adults.

  D. The influence of diet is included.

  35. What does the researchers suggest people do about drinking?

  A. Make their own decisions.

  B. Reduce the amount they drink.

  C. Have additional drinks occasionally.

  D. Drink according to the countries’ guidelines.

On Monday, April 17, 2017, a unique partnership between Saint Agatha and Phalanx Family Services began. Saint Agatha is a primary school and day care program. Phalanx Family Services is a full-service, nonprofit (非盈利的) organization offering various programming for in-need families living in Chicago.

Thirteen in-school youths, between the ages of 16〜18, started training as young reporters in an eight-week camp organized by the two organizations. The program is designed to teach them how to become city reporters. After completing the program successfully, they will receive a job reporting for one of nine online news about the project.

The very thought of 13 youths’ improving reading and writing levels and hunting for career opportunities in journalism (新聞業(yè)) is exciting! Imagine. Chicago youths report positive and inspiring stories about the happenings around Chicago’s black and brown communities, which are much better than frightening stories coming from local and national medium.

I admire Saint Agatha and Phalanx Family Services for training youths in a needed skill set. As I see it, technology has harmed youths’ reading and writing abilities. My father often says, “Youth is wasted on the young. “It sounds like the wisdom of the old. But Saint Agatha offers training and the opportunity for youths to take an active part in reporting the happenings and events they experience day to day in order to prove students don’t waste youth.

  28. What is the main purpose of the eight-week camp?

  A. To improve students’ interest in study.

  B. To help students become more independent.

  C. To teach youths how to become city reporters.

  D. To let youths know about their local culture and customs.

  29. What does Saint Agatha mainly show to us?

  A. What our father said is right.

  B. Youth is not wasted by students.

  C. Technology harms youths’ reading and writing abilities.

  D. Technology provides the youth with more opportunities

  30. The underlined word “It” in the last paragraph refers to “ ”.

  A. Youth

  B. Technology

  C. Youth is wasted on the young

  D. Reporting the happenings and events

  31. What can be inferred from the text?

  A. The author is in favor of the eight-week camp.

  B. Phalanx Family Services is aiming to make money.

  C. The history of the city is mainly recorded by youths.

  D. The thirteen in-school youths unwillingly completed the program.

As any person suffering from lack of sleep knows, dark circles under the eyes usually stand out after a bad night’s sleep.

But why do people get these dark eye bags? The answer is both genetic (that is, relating to your DNA) and environmental (a result of your everyday living, such as rubbing your eyes or getting too little sleep), said Dr. Carol Clinton, a skin-care researcher in Dublin, Ohio.

But “the biggest reason is genes.” Clinton told Live Science. Eye bags are generally more noticeable in people who, because of genes, have thin or pale skin. When people are tired or very nervous, blood circulation in the eye area becomes slow, allowing blood to pool there. Clinton said. Capillaries (毛細血管) stand out, leading to dark eye circles, she said.

Besides, eye bags result from eyes’ fat moving forward. An age-connected increase in fat beneath the eyeballs leads to eye bags. “Anyway, when your eyes’ fat is moving forward, you may think about having an operation in that area,” Clinton said, “A person can get 9 hours of sleep a night, but still have eye bags because of a genetic development.”

In other cases, environmental problems cause eye bags. For example, allergies (過敏) — especially seasonal allergies—can cause capillaries to stand out. Getting too much sun can also damage and thin the skin, making dark circles under the eyes easy to see. Besides, eating salty foods can cause the body to hold more water, which makes eye bags worse, according to the Mayo Clinic.

  C. People with thick skin don’t get dark eye bags.

  Build trust

Stale the rules of the game

40 . The rules of the game have to be discussed and people need to be comfortable with their own roles. The team leader must act as a safe base, so members know who to turn to.

  A. Communicate face to face

  B. Try not to make mistakes

  C. Trust builds over time and with every action

  D. There is no need to communicate with your team
