  Boxing Day

People all know that December 25th is Christmas Day for Americans and other westerners. Yet not all people know Boxing Day.

Boxing Day is a holiday observed on December 26th, or the first weekday after Christmas. And it is a festival only for those service persons such as postmen, errand boys, newspaper boys, milkmen, etc. On that day, families traditionally give Christmas boxes to those service workers. It is a custom, but nobody is certain how it was originated.

A popular legend tells us the story. There was once a wealthy lady called Chatter in England. One morning many, many years ago, it snowed very heavily. Chatter was waiting anxiously for a very important letter from her boyfriend. Then a postboy came and gave her the letter. She was so delighted that she gave him a box containing gifts. Later on more and more people followed her example. As time went by, giving boxes of gifts to service persons became a custom in Britain. Later the custom spread to the British Commonwealth and America. In the United States, some people give their employees money instead of boxes nowadays.

“Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out of the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.

Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was imperfect. When he rushed home from school one day and threw himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be misfortunate. He cried out the tragedy, “A boy, a big boy... called me a freak (怪人).”

He grew up, handsome. A favourite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might communicate with other young people,” his mother blamed him, but felt a kindness in her heart.

Two years went by. One day, his father said to the son, “You’re going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret.” The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged.

Later he married and entered the diplomatic service. One day, he asked his father, “Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”

The years kept their secret, but the day did come. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.

“Mother said she was glad she never let her hair be cut,” his father whispered gently, “and nobody ever thought Mother less beautiful, did they?”

  A. Mother’s hair B. An unforgettable memory

Teenagers who drink alcohol are at higher risk of becoming victims of violence, a Cardiff University study has found.

A team from the School of Dentistry’s Violence Research Group studied drinking habits in children aged 11 - 16 in England. They found not only a link between drink and violence but also that children who drank were more likely to be hit, even if they weren’t violent themselves.

The researchers are now calling for measures to prevent alcohol misuse to reduce injury risk. Current policy focuses on reducing aggression but this research shows that there should be equal effort to reduce victimization.

More than 4,000 children were surveyed at 13 schools at four local authorities in the North, the Midlands, London, and the South. The study found that 25% of 11-year-olds were drinking monthly and 3.6% daily, with 12.8% admitting to getting drunk 3 to 5 times a year. By the age of 16, 40% were drinking weekly and 6.2% were drinking every day. The research also showed 22.6% of 16-year-olds were getting drunk more than 21 times a year.

The study, which has just been published in the Journal of Adolescence, found a strong link between frequency of drinking and frequency of hitting other people.

However, children who reported drinking monthly were also three times more likely to be hit. Adolescents who drank but didn’t get into fights were more likely to be hit than those who did fight.

Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders rather than the victims. His team is calling for more prevention work from parents and teachers in the first two years of secondary school by taking advantage of the “teachable moment”,that is, immediately after a student has missed school because of drunkenness.

Previous work by Professor Jonathan Shepherd has shown drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of reduced physical co-ordination, poor decision-making in threatening situations and isolation while out late at night.

He said, “This new study seems to be the first to show a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization. There now needs to he much more effort put into reducing alcohol misuse in order to reduce injury.”

  56. The main idea of the passage is that teenagers who drink alcohol ________.

  A. often offend other people

  B. often become injured

  C. are more likely to become victims of violence

  D. are more likely to fight with others

  57. The underlined word “aggression” in the third paragraph probably means “________”.

  A. violence B. sad feelings

  C. bad manners D. drunkenness

  58. The research argues that more effort should be made to ________.

  A. reduce aggression

  B. prevent fighting

  C. reduce victimization

  D. prevent drinking alcohol

  59. Drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of all the following EXCEPT ________.

  A. reduced physical co-ordination

  B. isolation while out late at night

  C. a higher frequency of hitting other people

  D. poor decision-making in threatening situations

  60. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Professor Shepherd’s research?

  A. The frequency of children getting drunk increases with age.

  B. His previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders.

  C. Some children missed school because of drunkenness.

  D. This new study shows a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization.

  Learning to Respect Our Parents

Recently a program called “Learning to Respect Our Parents” is started in our school.

As we all know, respecting parents is one of China’s traditional moral value. However, as most students today are “the only child” in the family, they often regard themselves as the centre of the family, not caring much for their parents. For the program, ten dos have been worked out for the students to follow. For example, we are advised to remember our parents’ birthdays and express our good wishes to them. Besides, we are supposed to tell our parents what we will do when leaving home.

The program has been very successful and has won a lot of praise from parents and other members of society.

  Life is difficult.

But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.

Most do not fully see this truth. ___41___ they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent __42___ special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.

__43__ makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is __44__ (pain). Problems, 45___ (depend) on their nature, cause us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are __46___ (comfort) feelings, often as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.

Yet it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells success from __47__ (fail). When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in school we set problems for our children __48__ (solve). Marie-Therese Khan was 35 years old and a successful travel agent when she suffered from a stroke(中風(fēng)). She lost the use of every muscle in her body except her eyelids(眼皮).

After 10 months of limited communication with her family, Marie-Therese’s sister discovered she could communicate with her one letter at a time.

“When you go through the alphabet(字母表) and get to the right letter, Marie-Therese raises her eyes meaning ‘yes’ and for ‘no’ she closes her eyes,”close friend Sharon Simons said.

It was through this hard slow method that Marie-Therese finished the song lyrics of her CD called Waltzing With My Eyes.

“The CD expresses the feelings, hopes and frustrations of someone who is trapped within their own body,” Mrs. Simons said.

Mrs. Simons and a group of friends, including her two daughters Beth and Jess, got together and put Marie-Therese’s songs to music and recorded them.

The recording project was sponsored(贊助) by the Macquarie Lions Rotary Club and local song writers and musicians.

It’s taken almost two years to record the album, with each song having a special significance.

Spare My Children is Marie-Therese’s hope to be well again for the sake of her three sons. Stepping Stone is to her mum. I Still Miss You After All These years is about her dad. Is Love Enough raises that very question. Dance With Me expresses the longing for simple things and Waltzing With My Eyes expresses how she feels.

“It’s been a dream of Marie-Therese to have her writing turned into songs,”Mrs. Simons said.“She can do very little physically but has achieved something so great to have this CD after all her experiences with locked-in syndrome. She is such a lovely person. She’s moved so many people with her kindness.”

One of the most exciting and attractive fields of work today is the fashion industry. Some of the most well-known people in this industry are the fashion designers with unbelievable financial (金融的) Kingdoms. But most of the clothes that you wear have been designed by people that the world has never heard of. Although these unknown fashion designers will never make a very large amount of money as their famous workmates, most still would not think of changing their careers. They are doing what they love.

On 11th April, Susan Boyle appeared on the Britain’s Got Talent TV show. At first, her “very old-fashioned” look made everyone smile. Then, when she said that her dream was to become a musical theatre singer like Elaine Paige, smiles became laughter. Everyone had already judged her. To everyone in the audience ,she was another simple-minded loser who thinks she can sing.

As everyone was getting ready for the jury (評(píng)委會(huì))to tell her, “Thank you and goodbye! Next, please”, the magic started. She performed “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables. Her singing was totally unexpected. The audience was silent. Gobsmacked. The jury was completely charmed by her voice. Susan really amazed everyone: the jury, the public and the viewers at home. Susan, who nobody would have dared interrupt, was on top of the world!

She became globally popular with 10.5 million viewers on the night and more than 30 million people worldwide watching her performance online. She became the headlines of almost all the press in the world. At the end of her performance, Amanda Holden, a jury member, told her, “I honestly think that we were all being very doubtful and I think that’s the biggest wakeup call ever. And I just want to say that it was a complete privilege (特權(quán))listening to that!” Despite having only progressed through the first round of the TV competition so far, some music experts were now talking of record deals and how she could get straight to number one in America, how she could also soon appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the US.

So what should one conclude from this story? Well, maybe next time we meet someone with a “funny look ” or “funny ways”, someone who people say is dull or unattractive, let’s not judge them by how they look, and give them a chance instead! Who knows what we could discover behind a “funny look ” or “funny ways” –a best friend, a partner, or a talent?

  閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng),并在答題卡上將該項(xiàng)涂黑。

  (A)

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收款臺(tái)), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.

I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple that I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. we chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.

I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.

Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (電池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership – a shop selling cars – was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.

“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?” I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesman. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.

So, you have to give a speech - and you’re terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it’s over. I’m just no good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again. ”

Cheer up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they will help you make your points more clearly. Never forget your audience. Look at them directly into their eyes. Don’t talk over their heads (keep in mind that the concepts of relativism(相對(duì)論) are rarely understood), and don’t talk down to them (“who invented the telephone” is not a friendly question). Speak loud enough in order that everyone hears you clearly unless there is a microphone. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Just remember: be prepared. Know your subject, your audience and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to -person contact with your audience.

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? Give it a try and see what happens.

  56. The main idea of this article is _________.

  A. you can improve your speaking ability B. a poor speaker can never change

  C. always make a short speech D. it is hard to make a speech

  A. many people are afraid of giving a speech B. many people are happy to give a speech

  A. speak too loudly B. look at the ceiling

  C. look down upon them D. use words and ideas that are too difficult

Water is worth more than gold and is necessary for survival above anything else on the earth. Even so, over one billion people do not have safe water to drink and therefore cannot live healthy lives. They are the innocent (無(wú)辜的) children and hopeless families. These people do not have enough water to grow food. They don't even have enough water to keep themselves alive.

Worldwide hunger problems are really water problems. Without water, crops and other plants die and people go hungry and become weak. Weakness makes it easier for people to be the victims of the “quiet killer”, hunger.

Every day, almost 40,000 people die from diseases directly linked to drinking polluted water. Even if there is enough food to eat, family may still be slowly dying from another form of hunger called “invisible hunger”. It comes from drinking unsafe water. 80% of serious childhood diseases that kill children and destroy families worldwide are caused not by a shortage of food and medicine, but by drinking polluted water.

Water is the lifeblood of a community(社會(huì)). When water is unsafe to drink, the entire community suffers. Sick children lack (缺少) the energy to learn and weak young men lack the strength to work hard, so poverty continues. In many places, it is the women and children who are responsible for finding and carrying water. This work often leaves little or no time for women to do other things and for children to get education, so poverty continues. Nothing can change a community like providing a source of clean water. Water means a new life.

  61. World hunger problem is caused mainly by lack of ___________.

  A. money B. farmland C. water D. farmers

  62. Which of the following caused the “invisible hunger”?

  A. The shortage of water B. The bad quality of food

  C. The polluted water D. The lack of food

  63. What can we know from the last paragraph?

  A. Some children spend time in looking for safe water instead of attending school.

  B. The death rate is higher than the birth rate because of unsafe water.

  C. Women regard carrying water as their part-time job in poor countries.

  D. Young people lose the hope of life when poverty continues.

  64. In which order is the passage developed paragraph by paragraph?

  a. Water problem causes poverty.

  b. Water can solve the problem of hunger.

  c. Water is the source of life

  d. Unsafe water leads to the breakout of diseases.

  A. a-b-d-c B. c-b-a-d

  C. d-c-b-a D. c-b-d-a

  65. The passage mainly describes ________________.

  A. the serious pollution of worldwide water

  C. the great pressure under a shortage of water

  D. the importance of water to our life
