Nervous air travelers, concerned about the risks of old planes, may first worry about how well the wings or engines are holding up. But a plane’s tires(輪胎) suffer a lot of wear and tear too. A new device that attaches to the wheels could make the life of those tires long, saving the world’s airlines millions of dollars per day.
When aircraft reach their destination, pilots extend the landing equipment to prepare for touchdown. “Before the plane lands, its tires aren’t spinning(旋轉(zhuǎn)),” says Phillipe Lothaller. He is a 17-year-old engineer at Rondebosch Boy’s High school in Cape Town, south Africa. But when the plane’s tires hit the runway, they start spinning at very high speeds. For some aircraft, landing speeds can be as high as 200 kilometers(124 miles) per hour.
“That instant high speed is very stressful for a tire,” says Lothaller. “Friction(摩擦) can cause a tire’s rubber to quickly hit 240℃. The stresses of landing also tend to pull the layers of a tire apart, causing them to separate from each other. Each tire can be retread(翻新) only five times before it must be replaced.”
Now, Lothaller has designed a device to reduce wear and tear on those tires. Lothaller points to other benefits from extending the life of airplane tires. For example, airports wouldn’t have to spend so much money in removing broken tires from runways.

Once upon a time, there was a wolf called Howler who lived in a valley where lots of fruit trees grew. Howler often tried to climb up the trees to eat the fruit. But the most delicious fruit was on a very tall tree that Howler couldn’t reach.
In the valley, an elderly man named Martin also had a few fruit trees that he looked after very well. But as he was getting older, he began to notice that he didn’t have the strength to pick the fruit.
Martin had some of the biggest and most beautiful fruit trees in the valley, which was why Howler had his eye on them. One day he decided to steal the fruit and started jumping up and down the tree.
Martin looked out of the window and realized that the wolf was trying to steal fruit from his beautiful trees. Howler jumped and howled, but he couldn’t reach even the lowest branches of such a big tree.
Seeing this, Martin had a great idea: he offered Howler a ladder to climb up, but in return the wolf would have to give him half of whatever he picked. Howler accepted the deal and set to work collecting the fruit. For the whole morning, he went up and down the ladder filling his basket with the fruit.
Howler soon realized that he could eat all the fruit if he didn’t give Martin some. Thus, he thought up a new and secret plan. Martin, on the other hand, trusted Howler and even began to think they would be friends forever.
But the greedy(貪婪的) wolf stole the ladder from Martin and went off to other trees in the area for more fruit. Realizing that the ladder was missing, Martin went looking for it. Martin felt very disappointed at the trick and no longer trusted Howler. But he still forgave the greedy wolf and they later became friends again, though he never made any more deals with him.

You have studied hard in class, done all of your homework, and you think you have understood the material. But then the day of the test comes. Suddenly, you feel so nervous that you can’t answer the questions. If this sounds like you, you may have a case of test anxiety----the nervous feeling that people sometimes get when they’re about to take a test.
Test anxiety can be a real problem when someone is so stressed out over a test that he or she can’t focus on the test questions and do his or her best work. Feeling ready to meet the challenge, though, can keep test anxiety at a manageable level.
Use a little stress to your advantage. Stress is a signal that helps you prepare for something important that is about to happen. Instead of reacting to the stress by worrying or complaining about the test with friends, let stress remind you to study well in advance of a test.
Ask for help. If sitting a test stresses you out so much that your mind goes blank and causes you to miss answers that you know, then your level of test anxiety probably needs your care. You should talk to your teacher if you get extreme test anxiety.
Be prepared. Some students think that going to class is all it takes to learn and do well in tests. But there’s much more to learning than just hoping to take in everything in class. That is why good study habits and skills are so important----and why no amount of cramming(臨時(shí)死記硬背) or study the night before a test can take the place of the deeper level of learning that happens over time with regular study.
Also, taking care of your health---- by getting enough sleep, exercise, and eating well before a test ---- can help keep your mind working at its best.
Everything takes time and practice, and learning to beat test anxiety is no different. It won’t go away overnight, but facing and dealing with test anxiety will help you deal with stress management, which is a valuable skill in many situations besides taking tests.
( )38. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To help teachers know if a student has test anxiety.
B. To help people deal with stress management in the future.
C. To give students suffering from test anxiety a way to beat it.
D. To give struggling students tips on how to be top of their class.
( )39. You know you have test anxiety when ____.
A. your teacher calls you into their office after a test
B. you are too nervous to perform at your best during a test
C. you have not been looking after your health before a test
D. you have been to every class and studied hard for the test
