Ask John Morse, publisher of Merriam-Webster Dictionaries, to 10 the word that defines the close of the millennium and he doesn’t hesitate: “Internet”.

The Internet has swept into the American vocabulary and 11 to so many new words and phrases---- netizens, chat room and 12 , among them---- that it has come to represent an era in social history.

“We first started seeing 13 citations in 1994, and 14 it was established in the dictionary,” Morse says, “It was just astounding.”

Just a century ago, another form of 15 swept into the language. In the 1898 edition of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, the hot new word was “telephone”. It brought massive social change and reshape 16 people did business, just as the Internet is doing today.

“Telephone” was no easy linguistic act to follow. It helps bring into 17 a wide range of new words and phrases---- busy signals, wrong numbers, voice mails, cell phones. It also gave the United States its 18 : Hello.

But “Internet” is holding its own, in part by borrowing words from older technologies and giving them new meanings, 19 “bookmark”, “copy” and “browser”.

20 , “Internet” has created a new vocabulary that has come to represent a historical era of change.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being (health and happiness) of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Business can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities(設(shè)施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity ,sewers (陰溝) to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

  71. Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before the passage?

  A. It is extremely important to develop tourism

  B. Building roads and hotel is essential

  C. Support facilities are highly necessary

  D. Planning is of great importance to tourism

  72. Too many tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT _________.

  A. a bad impact on other industries B. a change of tourists’ customs

  C. over crowdedness of places of interest D. pressure in traffic

  73. It is good for local people to be well aware that tourism will _______.

  A. use up a large amount of water B. weaken their economy

  C. help establish their traditions D. help improve their life

  74. The underlined word "inhabitants" probably means _____.

  A. tourists B. passengers C. population D. citizens

  75. It can be inferred from the text that __________.

  A. the author doesn't like tourism developing so fast

  B. local people will benefit from tourist attraction

  C. other parts of a country's economy won't benefit from tourism much

  D. we can't build too many support facilities
