Too often, I hear people say “I’m just a housewife” when they introduce themselves. I don’t understand why their introduction is always filled with regret and self-pity. Is it really a crime to be a housewife? Is it really embarrassing when you choose not to work outside and instead choose to work in your home?

How could you be “just a housewife” when the basic social unit of society depends on you and your service? A housewife works for the longest hour, supporting your husband, child’s studies, caring for elders, managing finances, pay8ing bills, grocery shopping, cooking according to individual taste, cleaning, etc. a housewife could be anyone: daughter, wife, mother, teacher, financial adviser, fashion designer and nurse, gardener, driver, cook, and so on. Don’t think you are not being paid for it. You get the reward that no money can offer—the love and affection of your family, their trust in you, a happy home and your own satisfaction.

It is you who choose to be in this occupation, willingly or for any other reason. After a busy day, all wait to return to the comfortable home set by you. They know you will be there to absorb all their stress and tiredness and relax them. Would the life have been the same if you had been working outside to earn some money? Would you along with your family have been able to buy all the content in life that you are enjoying now with that money?

Respect yourself for what you are. Introduce yourself to the world with the same dignity. The world understands the importance of your job. It’s time to make them accept it. Introduce yourself with pride and with twinkle in your eyes “I am a housewife” . Kick that “just” out.

  24. People feel _____when they say “I’m just a housewife”.

  A. regretful B. satisfied C. proud D. anxious

  25. Listing the housewife’s duties, the author implies a housewife___________.

  A. usually leads a terrible life B. plays a more important role

  C. makes a great contribution to the family D. does not always get her reward

  26. If a housewife worked outside, she would _________.

  A. have the same life like before B. lose the content that she is enjoying

  C. set a comfortable home for her family D. absorb her family’s stress

  27. What is the author’s attitude toward housewives?

  A. Supportive B. Doubtful C. Opposed D. Disappointed

Researchers at University of California report that elderly women who sit for more than 10 hours a day with low physical activity have cells that are biologically older by eight years compared to women who are less sedentary.

The study, published online January 18 in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found elderly women with less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day and who remain seated for more than 10 hours per day have shorter telomeres(染色體終端), which protect chromosomes(染色體)from becoming bad and progressively shorten with age.

As a cell ages, its telomeres naturally shorten, but health and lifestyle factors, such as obesity and smoking, may quicken that process. Shortened telomeres are associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and major cancers.

“Our study found cells age faster with a sedentary lifestyle. Chronological(編年的)age doesn’t always match biological age,” said Shadyab, PhD, lead author of the study.

Shadyab and his research team believe they are the first to objectively measure how the combination of sedentary time and exercise can influence the aging biomarker.

Nearly 1,5000 women, ages 64 to 95, participated in the study. The participants completed questionnaires and wore an accelerometer on their right hip for seven consecutive days during waking and sleeping hours to track their movements.

“We found that women who sat longer did not have shorter telomere length if they exercised for at least 30 minutes a day, the national recommended guideline,” said Shadyab. “Discussions about the benefits of exercise should start when we are young, and physical activity should continue to be part of our daily lives as we get older, even at 80 years old.”

Shadyab said future studies will examine how exercise relates to telomere length in younger populations and in men.

  28. The underlined word “sedentary” in the 1st paragraph most probably means________

  A asleep B elderly C seated D active

  29. The study mainly found recently that

  A. too much sitting but too little exercise may quicken biological aging

  B. telomeres progressively shorten with age

  C. physical activities stop women from aging

  D. shortened telomeres lead to major cancers

  30. Which of the following true?

  A. Cells age faster with a less sedentary lifestyle

  B. Physical activity isn’t necessary for those at 80 years old

  C. The related studies will be carried out

  D. The finding is true of younger participants

  31. Where do you most probably find this passage?

  A. In a fashion tabloid B. In a text book

  C. In a science journal D. In a beauty poster

Activities That Sharpen Your Practical Intelligence

I love learning by doing. 36 Life is all about continuing and compounding growth and evolution. Learning by doing empowers me to create new value, habits and experiences, which all translate to a more productive and rewarding life.

  1. Learn to code.

Coding is not just for computer geeks. Even if it is just to understand how a computer works, to make your job more efficient or to add some common knowledge and a cool hobby on your list, coding can provide value. Coding creates new synapses(神經(jīng)元突觸)in your brain by deconstructing and analyzing problems. 37

  2. Try an escape room.

I’m crazy about these things. I’ve been to seven in the past five weeks. For those who don’t know, an escape room is an immersed(浸入)experience. You are locked in a room and have to solve puzzles and clues to get out. These escape rooms teach you how to use limited resources and rely on a team. There is no preparation for it. 38

  3. Build something.

Take a hands-on class on carpentry or any DIY building class that you find interesting. 39 . Learning to build helps push your mental limitations, and will empower you to look at resources and supplies in new ways. Worst-case situation is that you end up with an extra bookshelf.

  4. Invent something.

___40 ? Maybe it’s a simple device you could use at home or it’s organizing your apartment in a way that you will get the most of the space. You can be more inventive by figuring out how to use your resources efficiently or how to create new value with inventions of your own. They can be as simple as your phone in a cup to create amplified music or as complex as a fully automated home. Start using your brain in an inventive way and you’ll be able to access more brain power for other tasks.

  A. Every second counts and every action is a learning process

  B. They help to improve your overall intelligence.

  C. What would make your life easier

  D. It also teaches you how to learn

  E. Practical intelligence is just that

  F. What are some of yours.

  G. Make sure you work with your hands in the class
