An Indonesia man believed to be the oldest person alive celebrated his 146th birthday Saturday, despite having claimed he no longer wants to be alive.
Mbah Gotho, whose official name is Sodimejo, lives with his grandson in a town called Sragen within Indonesia’s Central Java province.
Gotho made international headlines in September after speaking to local media, which led local officials to confirm the truth of his identity card. Gotho’s birth date is listed as Dec. 31, 1870.
While officials say the document is real, they admitted it would be impossible to prove whether Gotho was actually born that year.
However, the man claimed to remember the opening of a local sugar factory, which was recorded in 1880.
Gotho said he has outlived four wives, 10 brothers and sisters, and three children. His only remaining close relatives are grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-children, he claimed. “What I want is to die.” he told local media in September, according to Reuters, one of the biggest names in media worldwide.
Gotho’s grandson claimed the 146-year-old had made arrangements for his death as far back as 1992, when he bought a forever sleeping place close to the burial sites of his children.
Gotho’s grandson also said the elder was in relatively good health, suffering only from eyesight problem and loss of hearing, and enjoyed his days smoking and eating.

A new American weather satellite could save more lives by better predicting extreme weather conditions. The satellite was launched in the state of Florida on November 19, 2016. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also known as NOAA, has been working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on the project.
NOAA officials are calling the new satellite GOES-R. That is short for a much longer name the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series.
NOAA said GOES-R could improve the nation’s ability to observe weather conditions and make weather predictions. It said the satellite’s device would lead to more exact and timely weather forecasts, watches and warnings.
The government agency said the satellite will require testing of its six instruments and will be ready to work “within a year.” One of the six instruments on the satellite is designed to help scientists study lightning strikes and map them. This, NOAA says, will help the agency follow the movement of severe storms and provide more detailed warnings.
“The next generation of weather satellites is finally here,” said NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan. She described GOES-R as one of the most effective Earth-observing machines ever created. Sullivan said its instruments will be able to study Earth five times faster and with four times more detail than any other NOAA satellite currently in operation. A NOAA statement said the greater detail will help improve the agency’s study of ocean storms, as well as “the prediction and warnings of severe weather.” In addition, GOES-R will be able to provide improved rainfall estimates, which will lead to more timely and detailed flood warnings.
Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA in short, says that the GOES-R satellite will improve the ability of people and organizations across America to prepare for, and react to, weather-related disasters.
28. What can we learn about the new weather satellite?
A. It has been put into service for more than 5 months already.
B. It is the most effective Earth-observing machine ever made.
C. It works faster and provides more detailed information than any other American satellite.
D. It can help America to get prepared for and react to climate catastrophes better.
29. The satellite gets its name directly from______.
A. NOAA B. NASA C. GOES-R D. FEMA
30. Why does the reporter quote the words from different people and organizations in the news?
A. To show opinions vary from person to person.
B. To show the development of the satellite.
C. To convince the readers of superb functions of the satellite.
D. To prove they are authorities.
31. The passage mainly focuses on______.
A. a new American satellite that can be used for military purposes
B. what the next generation of American weather satellites will be like
C. the fact that NOAA and NASA work together to develop a new technology
D. the comparison between a new satellite and the older ones
D
When asked to name the one invention that would be impossible to live without, Americans did not pick their phone. They didn’t pick their car. They picked their toothbrush, according to the Lemelson-MIT survey. Hold up though. That survey was from 2003. So we conducted an informal survey of HowStuffWorks staffers to find out if the toothbrush would still take the lead 14 years later. It did. The toothbrush got 11 votes, followed by the cell phone (5), computer (3), microwave (2) and car (2).
You probably aren’t amazed. The tiny toothbrush is an important product for a lot of modem cultures, and it comes by its popularity honestly; Versions of the toothbrush have been around since ancient Babylonian times. But note that these were not the boring plastic creations we take out of the box.
“The first tooth cleaning instrument seems to have been the ‘toothpick’or more correctly small bones or slivers of bones,” writes Scott Swank, dentist and leader of the National Museum of Dentistry, in an email.
He points out that people used even less technical means, too. “Fingers wrapped in cloth have been used for ages to clean teeth,” he says. “An ancient Greek doctor recommended using a round woolen ball dipped in honey to clean one’s teeth.’’But not all recipes (配方) or early toothpaste were so sweet.
“Both the Greeks and Romans had recipes for toothpaste,” says Swank. We’re here for the powerful toothbrush, and Swank says that the first real evidence of that comes from Babylon, around 2500-1800 B. C. The frayed (纖維狀散開(kāi)的) end of a stick or plant was used to brush the teeth.
We have to look much closer to our own times to find a brush we might recognize. “The first device that we would consider people to use the modem toothbrushes was recorded in China in 1500,’’says Swank. In 1780, the English merchant William Addis fashioned a modern “toothbrush” and began mass-producing them in England. Sounds too good to be true? “I have no reason to doubt the story as a whole,’’Swank says. “It could have become a bit different over time but I think, on the whole, it stands up.”
32. According to the passage, how many HowStuffWorks staffers at most took part in the survey?
A. 5 B. 11 C. 12 D.23
33. The underlined words in the second paragraph probably refer to_.
A. different techniques of making the toothbrush
B. different steps to make the toothbrush
C. different periods of making the toothbrush
D. different makes of the toothbrush
34. Which of the following can NOT be inferred from the passage?
A. The survey was conducted in the year of 2017.
B. The most recent survey showed the toothbrush is still considered an important invention.
C. Records showed the Chinese people were the first to use modem toothbrushes.
D. Scott Swank didn’t at all believe the way modem toothbrushes got spread.
35. What may well serve as the title of the passage?
A. What was used to make the toothbrush?
B. How long was the history of the toothbrush?
C. How was the toothbrush historically developed?
D. Why was the toothbrush chosen as a daily necessity?
