For three and a half months, I lived, studied and worked in London, England. During my time in the United Kingdom, I traveled to ten countries, I made new friends, took thousands of pictures and broke two pairs of shoes while observing the breathtaking natural wonders.

So, when people ask me, “What was the most amazing part of your study abroad?” I have a hard time giving them an answer. But I know the most important aspect of my study was that I learned more about the world than ever before by observing it through first-hand experience.

As an education student, I believe that one way to create a strong valuable learning experience is by observing something first hand. Whether it is looking at bacteria under a microscope in a lab, analyzing a painting at a museum, or working on communications and team work skills on a group project, learn it in person.

My teachers often encourage us students to gain understanding and knowledge of something from experience. This allows students to take ownership of their learning and develop a personal connection to materials.

Dreaming of being a social study teacher, I believe that learning by doing has extreme value for students to learn about a period in history, region of the world, and economic systems, or culture.

If students are provided the opportunity to go on field trips, examine primary sources, and be immersed in an environment they are studying, they can truly analyze the world around them.

In my future classroom, I want to expose students to the idea of exploration. In every unit, I hope to create an environment where my students actually feel like they are a part of the world they are studying and for them to become world travelers by being active scholars in the classroom.

If children aren’t particularly interested in history, it’s not their fault. History, while potentially an exciting subject, hasn’t traditionally been treated as interesting a subject as math and reading. They are often given only a glimpse into a historical events or customs into context, so it’s no wonder children don’t often think of history as a subject that excites them and makes them know more.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. History has the power to come alive if it’s just presented to children in the right way. I was reminded of this when I took my daughter and her friend to visit Colonial Williamsburg. It’s a living museum which features hundreds of restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished buildings staffed with costumed interpreters who tell the stories of the 18th-century city.

The two 9-year-girls I was accompanying around town got to dress up in relatively authentic period clothes, ask whatever questions came to their minds, and leave behind the trapping of modern life for a day while they discovered that sheep are shorn to create cloth and printing presses have to be put together letter by letter. Thanks to a guide, they also discovered much more about the horrors of slavery than they could ever have learned from a text book.

As a writer, I have personally described Cobblestone, our American history magazine for kids 9 through 14, as a place where history comes alive. Now, I won’t claim that a magazine can make a subject come alive like Colonial Williamsburg, but having road some of the articles did a great deal to helping us gain some much needed context fro our trip. If you are planning a trip with any sort of historical aspect, from a visit to a national park to a trip to place like Colonial Williamsburg, Cobblestone could act as your personal guide to the trip.

Of course, for a complete historical view, be sure to subscribe to Cobblestone so you can get awesome history all year long. Here are some popular family trips with an historical component and a back issue that might help your family get the most out of the experience.

  29. Children show little interest in history mainly because .

  A. they are forced to learn such a subject

  B. it’s less important than math and reading

  C. the events or customs always discourage them

  D. the information isn’t presented in the right way

  30. Why does the author mention Cobblestone in the text?

  A. To make it better known to Americans.

  B. To call on more readers to subscribe to it.

  C. To stress its practical use in historical trips.

  D. To help people plan historical trips correctly.

  31. What will be talked about in the following paragraph of the text?

  A. The process of subscribing to a magazine.

  B. The tips for a complete historical view.

  C. The introduction of some family trips.

  D. The details of a personal guide to the trip.

  32. What can be the best title for the text?

  A. A Magical Place

  B. Living History

  C. Learning History Well

  D. Historical TripsD

We encounter pressure every single day in our life and work, and there are two main causes for it. The first is that wherever we work or live we will encounter challenges, difficulties and obstacles. All of these will create pressure for us. This kind of pressure is regarded as natural. As long as the hurdles(障礙) are overcome, the pressure will disappear naturally. But, the second cause of pressure is not so easily eliminated. The second cause of pressure is our own imaginings. This pressure from our own thoughts is much more difficult to get rid of because it has no real cause.

When we feel under pressure, we should first examine our lives and work to see whether there have been any recent changes. If so, have these changes have created new challenges, difficulties, and obstacles? If there happen to be any, it means that you are experiencing natural pressure, and as soon as the barrier is crossed, the pressure will fade naturally. On the other hand, if we find there have been no changes but we still feel pressured, then there is a big possibility that our feelings of pressure arise from the second cause, namely our own foolish act of indulging in agonizing delusions. If this happens, what should we do? The simplest way to deal with the problem is to transform our thought patterns and habits. In other words, we need to get a “brain transplant.”

If you often have anxiety, frustration, or pressure coming out of nowhere, if you were feeling fine when you suddenly became depressed because of too much pressure, then without doubt your subconscious is up to something. The best way to resolve this problem is to change your thinking habit. Start thinking positively. Always look on the bright side of life, and replace your old mind with a new one. And then, all your worries will be solved and all the pressures will vanish. I wish everyone a successful “brain transplant,” and let your heart be joyful and your spirits lifted.

  33. Which of the following belongs to the second cause of the pressure?

  A. Moving to a new neighborhood.

  B. Being afraid of failing an exam.

  C. Mother having a new baby.

  D. Switching to a new job.

  34. Which of the following isn’t the way that you deal with the second cause of the pressure?

  A. Transforming our thought patterns and habits.

  B. Starting thinking positively.

  C. Looking on the bright side of life.

  D. Having a rest for a few days.

  35. The author mainly tells us in Paragraph 2 that .

  A. different pressure needs different ways to deal with

  B. we should classify the pressure and then solve it in different ways

  C. pressures can be ruled out if we can classify them clearly

  D. we should face the pressure and deal with it positively第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

  根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Five reason to look for a summer job

It’s true that jobs for teens can be tough to find, but they’re out there, so go for it. If you don’t land the job you want, you’ll still gain something from the process.

You’ll develop your interview skills. 36 .learning how to do well in an interview is skill you’ll use forever. It helps with everything from getting into college to landing a full-time job when the time comes.

You'll get better at coping with rejection. 37 . Rejection is a fact of life, and there's no denying it can be hard to handle. The good news is, the more we face rejection and learn to deal with the feelings that go with it, the easier it becomes to get past the hurt and bounce back.

38 . Did you take a job that wasn't your first choice? You might discover a new skill or interest you never knew you had. Get offered the perfect job? Feel your self-esteem soar! Even if you don't really love your job but need to save for a new car or college, you'll learn that you can stick with something you don't particularly like to reach a goal that's important to you. And if nothing works out? You may decide to start your own business.

You'll push the limits of your comfort zone. Yes, it's a lot easier to sit home doing the same stuff you always do. But going out job-hunting can push you out of that comfort zone into a whole new experience. 39 . Even if all you come home with are some crazy stories, it's worth it.

You'll face less competition. The word's out that summer jobs are hard to find. 40 . If potential applicants remove themselves from the process, it ups your odds of landing a job. And, if you don't get the job you want, volunteer. It's a great way to gain experience and add something to your résumé, whether for college applications or future jobs.

The bottom line with summer jobs is to just go for it. Try something new. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain.

  A. Have confidence in finding a job.

  B. You’ll learn something about yourself.

  C. Take care not to be fooled in the market.

  D. And you never know what you might find.

  E. So lots of teens will give up without even trying.

  F. It's unlikely that you'll get the first job you interview for.

  G. The more jobs you apply for, the better you'll get at interviewing.第二部分:英語知識運用
