作為一個(gè)一有epiphany(頓悟)或eureka moment(發(fā)現(xiàn))就要到朋友圈寫(xiě)幾百個(gè)字英語(yǔ)celebrate、英語(yǔ)產(chǎn)出質(zhì)量較高的人,這次我決定談一談托福寫(xiě)作的語(yǔ)言。
經(jīng)常對(duì)孩子們說(shuō),語(yǔ)言不重要,但這是個(gè)big, fat lie,其實(shí)在判斷一個(gè)孩子最后能得多少分時(shí),我們還是看他的語(yǔ)言水平。我說(shuō)語(yǔ)言不重要,一是托福給分很lenient(寬松), 30分語(yǔ)言都不需要很好,而是短期提高語(yǔ)言質(zhì)量是tall order(很難)。
為什么語(yǔ)言水平難以提高呢?因?yàn)楹⒆觽儗?xiě)作時(shí)經(jīng)常think out of the box(創(chuàng)新),而不是take a page from someone else’s book(模仿)。而且很多人仍然只記單個(gè)字詞,而不是記固定表達(dá)和句式。
比如,環(huán)境污染會(huì)破壞經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展。你會(huì)怎么說(shuō)呢。
Environmental pollution threatens economic development,寫(xiě)到這樣已經(jīng)不錯(cuò),
但其實(shí)你還能說(shuō),
Environmental pollution takes a heavy toll on the economy/takes a heavy economic toll.
或者說(shuō)
Environmental pollution wreaks havoc on economic growth.
Environmental pollution puts economic growth in jeopardy.
Economic growth is at stake when the environment deteriorates.
這個(gè)最基本的例子,我的point是,很多情況下,用短語(yǔ)和習(xí)慣表達(dá)trumps(好于)一個(gè)單詞。
當(dāng)Flora還是Newcastle的學(xué)生時(shí),下面七八十個(gè)人盯著我,等我翻譯,我還是每句話都要用習(xí)慣表達(dá),帥帥的英國(guó)老師都笑了,老師們開(kāi)始說(shuō)我中到英更好。但其實(shí)這種強(qiáng)迫癥在口語(yǔ)中是一個(gè)ticking bomb, a disaster waiting to happen(災(zāi)難),但我更希望孩子們?cè)趯?xiě)作中能更在乎自己的表達(dá),使用已知的確認(rèn)無(wú)誤的句型,積累好詞好句,寫(xiě)作時(shí)想辦法用它們?cè)炀洌苍S你就會(huì)這幾個(gè)句子,但對(duì)托福已經(jīng)夠了??创蠹业淖魑?,強(qiáng)調(diào)句、倒裝句galore(泛濫)但這不一定是更好的英語(yǔ),只讓你的句子wordy(拖沓)。所以多準(zhǔn)備習(xí)慣表達(dá)和句型更重要。
接下來(lái),我想用托福寫(xiě)作的開(kāi)頭段講一下語(yǔ)言的使用。寫(xiě)開(kāi)頭段,我們一般的模式是背景爭(zhēng)議法?,F(xiàn)在大家都在討論一個(gè)話題,有人認(rèn)為A對(duì),有人認(rèn)為B對(duì),我認(rèn)為...。是不是過(guò)于沒(méi)有創(chuàng)意呢。但是語(yǔ)言能改善這個(gè)不足。Flora從以前寫(xiě)的作文中找了2段,用詞都還比較基本,也沒(méi)有寫(xiě)得多好,但托福不需要多好。我們看下面的例子吧。
1. Some prefer to buy a technological device as soon as it is available, others prefer to get it after it has been adopted by many people. Which do you prefer?
In the modern world, we are bedazzled by a plethora of choices when it comes to technological gadgets as high-tech companies roll out new phones, cameras and new everything every few months to prey on our predilection for novelty. While some have a penchant for the adrenaline rush of getting hands on the newest gizmos,
others have the patience to wait until the craze has abated. In my opinion, there is no point ingetting a high-tech product immediately after it hits the stores.
2. Do you agree or disagree that two people can be friends if one has more money than the other?
In the charged debate over whether two people in decidedly different financial situations can be friends, some argue that it’s not the income that matters so much as having things in common, while others maintain that friendships can never work for people at two ends of the financial spectrum. Weighing both sides of the argument, I find it hard to escape the conclusion that friendships don’t bode well for the rich/middling dichotomy.

(1) It appears, in so many aspects, very difficult to prefer one to another because all of them have their advantages and disadvantages to the extent that it is hard to distinguish.
Yet that does not mean they are of the same to me. To be frank, I would prefer A if personal quality is considered as a criterion to choose things.
Then why do I prefer A? I like it because it can _______________, thus makes me ______________.
There is another reason why I choose A, in terms of ________, __________. No wonder, it again brings me convenience that I cannot get if I choose any one of the others.

In conclusion, everybody wants to choose the one that fits him/her. So it is of great benefits for me to choose.

Which you would prefer depends on your own experience, life style and emotional concern. However, I would prefer C. There are three advantages of C as follow:
This can trace back to my childhood. Once with curiosity, I__________________.
Yet another reason is that_________. I can quote a common example. _______________.
Then why I do not like others? For example, why I do not like A? Because I have a bad experience with it. _______________. So, even when anyone mentioned it, I would catch a feeling of fear.
