Referring to an English lesson I’ve ever taken, I would like to share one taken in my high school. In order to bridge communication with one of our cooperated school in Australia, my high school just invited a team of Australian teachers to teach us how to learn English.

I still remember, at the very beginning of the English speaking class, the teacher just showed a picture of our mother nature and asked students to describe our own feeling about such harmonious system. Because of being nervous and afraid of making mistakes, no student was willing to open their mouth. Then the teacher asked one to use black-color pen to smear the original painting and said whether these winding black zigzag lines like sewage or garbage. Then to my surprise, we began to talk about our ideas about this painting. During the whole discussion, the teacher never denied anyone’s answer or pointed out grammar mistakes but used constant questions to inspire us to open mouth. Afterwards, he divided the whole class into six groups and required each group to select a represent to collect all teammates’ ideas and make a summary about the threats posed by human beings.

In the end, he made comments on every group’s discussion and told us the main purpose of this oral speaking—to encourage everyone to open mouth and express their own ideas, had been reached, because he knew the most obvious weakness of Chinese students is being afraid of making mistakes, in other words, lacking of confidence. Therefore, what he contributed to do during the whole class was continuous encouragement and guidance.

You know, in China, most teachers especially high school teachers always aim to the college entrance examination and ignore developing students’ capability of practical use of language speaking especially the building-up of confidence which leads we students always neglect the practical use of language use.

Now, I turn to be a teacher and as soon as I think of this English class, I will always know what I should do first to help my students is to build up their confidence and focus more attention to the process of studying not the outcome. So this English class just become a very essential inspiration in my life.

Ok right then, well the English lesson I‘m gonna talk about is the one I had during my primary school, which I guess must have been about ten or eleven years ago by now.

It was the first time that I was given a class by a foreign teacher. At that time,our English teacher introduced an American young guy to us. Out of curiosity, most of us swarmed around him. Then, he had a free talk with us in simple but humorous English. He spoke quite slowly and clearly so that we could follow him well. Meanwhile,he would repeat just in time what students did not understand. Greatly inspired, most of the students took an active part in asking him questions and interacting with him.So the atmosphere was quite alive during the whole class. And... I have to say that through this lesson, we all improve our oral English and the courage to speak another language other than our mother tongue.

When comparing this to most of the classes we had at that time, where we basically just went through the textbook and took notes, it was a thousand times more interesting, and of course, meaningful. Actually, from this lesson, I came to the conclusion that it is not so difficult to learn English if we talk more in it And L also learned that English can act as an interesting and useful tool in communications with foreigners if we’re good at it.

中國(guó)考生在練習(xí)口語(yǔ)的時(shí)候最大的問(wèn)題是什么呢?

根據(jù)筆者多年的觀察,許多考生學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)多年卻未曾突破,最大的原因不是方法問(wèn)題而是態(tài)度問(wèn)題。也就是說(shuō),大家一直在找方法,在各種方法之間選擇,最重要的行動(dòng)卻沒(méi)有??忌鷤兛梢韵胂?,我們?cè)趯W(xué)母語(yǔ)的時(shí)候有方法嗎?

筆者自己的口語(yǔ)比一般非英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)的學(xué)生好。原因總結(jié)為以下三點(diǎn),供大家借鑒:

1)大學(xué)時(shí)的大量練習(xí)。由于筆者是學(xué)校英語(yǔ)協(xié)會(huì)的會(huì)長(zhǎng),每周都要為會(huì)員組織英語(yǔ)活動(dòng),等于變相地在當(dāng)老師。

后來(lái)在英國(guó)讀教育心理學(xué)才發(fā)現(xiàn)能達(dá)到最好效果的學(xué)習(xí)方式,就是learning by teaching others(教會(huì)別人)。很多老師英語(yǔ)不錯(cuò),一是底子好,二是一直不斷在用,不斷在想辦法教會(huì)別人,所以自然就保持得好。

2)口語(yǔ)練習(xí)是從可以蹦詞、到蹦短語(yǔ)、再到蹦句子,這樣一個(gè)從簡(jiǎn)單到復(fù)雜的過(guò)程,和嬰兒學(xué)習(xí)語(yǔ)言并無(wú)兩樣。

能看懂的是被動(dòng)知識(shí),用說(shuō)出來(lái)的才是語(yǔ)言能力。我們中國(guó)的語(yǔ)言教學(xué)最大的問(wèn)題就是把語(yǔ)言知識(shí)等同于語(yǔ)言能力了。語(yǔ)言知識(shí)是語(yǔ)言能力的基礎(chǔ),但不是自動(dòng)等于能力。就好比,你讀了10本游泳的學(xué)術(shù)著作,你對(duì)游泳的知識(shí)已經(jīng)很豐富了,但你不下水,不去游,你還是一點(diǎn)也不具備游泳的能力。這種情況下掉下水,即便你學(xué)富五車(chē),一樣會(huì)被淹死。

3)在缺乏真實(shí)語(yǔ)言環(huán)境的境況下,外語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)能力的保持要靠每天的聽(tīng)力練習(xí)。語(yǔ)言的學(xué)習(xí)聽(tīng)力要先行。你能聽(tīng)懂心里起碼不慌。聽(tīng)的多了,自然就能下意識(shí)的講出來(lái),講不出來(lái),就是聽(tīng)的還不夠多。你能不能說(shuō)出,是(yes)和不(no)?當(dāng)然可以。其他不行,是因?yàn)榫毩?xí)的量不到位。所以要練就一口漂亮的口語(yǔ)就是這樣,要堅(jiān)持。

語(yǔ)言是否地道除了表面的語(yǔ)音語(yǔ)調(diào)問(wèn)題其實(shí)更深層的問(wèn)題是思維的問(wèn)題。思維的問(wèn)題是最根本的。經(jīng)常有雅思考生問(wèn),范老師,每次我說(shuō)英語(yǔ)的時(shí)候腦袋里總是先想中文,然后再把中文轉(zhuǎn)化成英語(yǔ),回答時(shí)總是很慢,這是我學(xué)習(xí)方法的錯(cuò)誤還是由于不熟練?

我回復(fù)說(shuō)用英語(yǔ)思維是學(xué)習(xí)英語(yǔ)最高境界。一門(mén)語(yǔ)言你如果習(xí)得成功了,那么用一個(gè)成語(yǔ)來(lái)講就是“得意忘形”。得到了語(yǔ)言的意思,忘記了語(yǔ)言的形狀。這位同學(xué)講英語(yǔ)的時(shí)候腦子里還要過(guò)中文,然后解碼成英文,說(shuō)明對(duì)英語(yǔ)這門(mén)語(yǔ)言,還沒(méi)有習(xí)得成功,還在學(xué)習(xí)之中。

那么怎樣習(xí)得?有沒(méi)有靈丹妙藥?

捷徑真的沒(méi)有。語(yǔ)言從學(xué)習(xí)(learning)到習(xí)得(acquisition/acquired)中間的這個(gè)過(guò)程很長(zhǎng)。如果是母語(yǔ)大概需要12-24個(gè)月,也就是2歲。在這24個(gè)月里面,你大概一共要主動(dòng)、被動(dòng)地做將近7000個(gè)小時(shí)的聽(tīng)力訓(xùn)練。

我們可以算算,考生在考四級(jí)聽(tīng)力、六級(jí)聽(tīng)力、雅思、托福聽(tīng)力之前做過(guò)多少小時(shí)的聽(tīng)力訓(xùn)練?

我的新浪微博曾經(jīng)介紹過(guò)一篇10000小時(shí)理論的文章。說(shuō)的是任何一個(gè)領(lǐng)域的專(zhuān)家需要至少10000個(gè)小時(shí)的練習(xí)才能成為這個(gè)領(lǐng)域的專(zhuān)家。

要達(dá)到用英語(yǔ)去思維足夠的聽(tīng)力輸入量和練習(xí)量是第一個(gè)基礎(chǔ)因素。除了足夠的練習(xí)量之外如果你不出國(guó),在國(guó)內(nèi)你很難真正達(dá)到用英語(yǔ)去思考。因?yàn)檎Z(yǔ)言是文化和思維的外衣??忌浅源竺住酌?、看馬恩列毛鄧...長(zhǎng)大的,咱們的思維和那邊吃牛肉、什么都看的西方人思維是不可能一樣的。

所以,不要為了追求用英語(yǔ)思維而去學(xué)英語(yǔ)。沒(méi)意義。至少我達(dá)不到這個(gè)水平。我能做到的是和老外聊天輪到我張嘴的時(shí)候,我的腦子里不過(guò)中文,這算不算用英語(yǔ)思維?我認(rèn)為不算。

總之,雅思口語(yǔ)的高分需要的是堅(jiān)持練習(xí)。態(tài)度比方法重要。英語(yǔ)這門(mén)相對(duì)簡(jiǎn)單的語(yǔ)言只要堅(jiān)持去學(xué)了一定會(huì)好起來(lái)的。
