One day, an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget.
一天,一位時(shí)間管理專(zhuān)家給一群商務(wù)學(xué)員做講座,為了清晰地闡述他的觀點(diǎn),使學(xué)生銘記在心,他做了一個(gè)演示。
As he stood in front of the group of high-powered overchievers, he said, “Okay, time for a quiz.”He then pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouth mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one by one, into the jar.

When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, asked ,asked, “is this jar full?”Everyone in the class said, “yes.”
瓦罐里再也放不進(jìn)石塊了。這時(shí)，他問(wèn)道：“滿了嗎?”班上每個(gè)人都回答到：“滿了。”
Then he said, “Really?” He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar, causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks, then he asked the group once more, “Is this jar full?”By this time the class was on to him . “Probably not “ one of them answered.“Good!” he replied.
然后，專(zhuān)家問(wèn)：“真的嗎?”他把手伸到桌子下面，拿出一桶砂礫。他把一些砂礫倒進(jìn)瓦罐，然后搖了搖，，這些砂礫便滲進(jìn)石塊的縫隙中。這時(shí)他又問(wèn)這些學(xué)員：“滿了嗎?”此時(shí)，班里的學(xué)員不再像剛才那么肯定了，“可能還沒(méi)有。”一位學(xué)員回答到。“是的”。他應(yīng)聲道。
He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question. “Is this jar full?”“No!” the class shouted.Once again, he said, “Good!” Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim.
專(zhuān)家再次從桌子下面拿出一桶細(xì)沙倒進(jìn)瓦罐，細(xì)沙滲進(jìn)石塊與砂礫的縫隙中，他再次問(wèn)道：“滿了嗎?”“沒(méi)有!”班級(jí)里的人異口同聲地叫道。他又說(shuō)：“回答很好!”然后，他抓起一壺水，在瓦罐中注滿了水。
Then the expert in time-management looked at the class and asked, “What is the point of this illustration?”O(jiān)ne eager beaver raised his hand and said, “The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it.”

"No", the speaker replied, “That’s not the point.”The truth this illustration teaches us is this: If you don’t put the big rocks in first, you’ll never get them in at all.What are the big rocks in your life? Your children, your spouse, your loved ones, your friendships, your education your dreams, a worthy cause, teaching or mentoring others, doing things that you love, time for yourself, your health.Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first, or you’ll never get them in at all. If you sweat the little stuff (i.e. gravel, the sand) then you’ll fill your life with little things you will never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big, important stuff (the big rocks).”So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: what are the “big rocks” in my life? Then put those in your jar first.
“不對(duì)，”這位專(zhuān)家回答道：“這不是我的目的。這個(gè)演示告訴我們：假如你不先把石塊放進(jìn)去，以后也就不可能放進(jìn)去了。那么，一生中你的大石塊是什么呢?你的孩子、愛(ài)人，你所愛(ài)的一切，你的朋友、學(xué)業(yè)、夢(mèng)想，一切值得你去做的事業(yè)，還是教育指導(dǎo)別人?做你喜歡做的事，為自己安排好時(shí)間，包括你的健康。記住，先把大石塊放進(jìn)去，否則，這些大石塊永遠(yuǎn)也不可能放進(jìn)去。如果你忙碌于一些小事(象砂礫、細(xì)沙之類(lèi)的)。那么你的世界里都是這些小事，你就沒(méi)有寶貴的時(shí)間來(lái)做大事、要事(如大石塊)。因此，今天晚上或明天早上，當(dāng)你想起這個(gè)故事時(shí)，問(wèn)自己這樣一個(gè)問(wèn)題：我生命中的大石塊是什么?然后把它放進(jìn)瓦罐里去。”
