一、用作連詞
1. 用作等立連詞，使其前后的詞、短語、分句相互對照，作“但是，然而，可是”解。
例如：
She is young but very experienced.
她雖然年輕但經驗豐富。
2. 用于表示歉意的話語之后，表示謝絕或不贊成。
例如：
I'm sorry, but I disagree with you.
對不起，我不同意你的意見。
3. 用于兩個并列的分句之間，與前面的否定詞形成對比，作“無„„而不„„”解。
例如：
It never rains but it pours.
不雨則已，一雨傾盆。
I never go past that house but I think of my miserable life in the old society.
我走過那所房子時，
沒有一次不想起我在舊社會所過的悲慘生活。
二、用作介詞
1. 與 no ，nobody ，nothing ，none ，who 等詞連用，作“除„„之外”解，用來排除同類中的一分子，或從整體中除去一部分。
例如：
Nobody knew her but me.
除我以外，沒有人認識她。
Nothing but disaster would come from such a plan.
這個計劃只能帶來災難，別無益處。
2. but 前面有do的某種形式時，but后面的動詞不定式要省略to ;其前沒有do的某種形式時，but后面的不定式要帶to。
例如：
We had no choice but to wait.
除了等待，我們別無選擇。
He did nothing all day long but watch TV。
一整天，他除了看電視，別無他事可做。
3. 與last ，next 及one ，two 等連用，作“倒數第二、第三”等解。
例如：
Jack was the last but one to arrive.
杰克是倒數第二個到達的。
三、用作副詞
1. 意思上相當于 only ，后面跟名詞或動詞。
例如：
Tom is but a child.
湯姆只是個孩子。
We can but try now.
我們現在只有嘗試一遍。
2. but 出現在too „to „結構前面時，不定式含肯定意義。
例如：
I'm but too glad to go there with you.
我非常高興和你一起去那里。
四、含but 的習慣用語
1. but for =without ，意為“要不是;如果沒有”，意思上相當于一個虛擬條件句。
例如：
But for the rain (If it hadn't rained), we would have had a pleasant journey.
要不是天下雨，我們這次旅行就愜意了。
But for your help, we couldn't have carried out the plan.
如果沒有你的幫助，我們不可能實現那個計劃。
2. but that = except that ，意為“若非;要不是”，引導虛擬條件狀語從句。
例如：
He would have helped me but that he was short of money at that time.
要不是他那時候沒錢，他會幫助我的。
3. but then = on the other hand ，意為“不過;在另一方面”。
例如：
London is a noisy place, but then it's also a place where you get the best entertainment.

4. nothing but = only ，意為“只;不過是”。

but的常見用法講解
介詞but表示“除……外”，即英語except, other than或not including的意思，是最常用的介詞之一。主要用法有以下幾點：
?、倥cno, no one, none, nobody, nothing, nowhere等詞連用。例如：
No one can do it but him.只有他才能擔當此任。/None but him knows this plant.只有他認識這植物。
I heard nothing but the wind.除了風聲，我什么也沒聽到。
?、谂call, anything, anywhere, every, everybody, everyone等詞連用。例如：
You were all wrong but me.除我外，你們都錯了。
Everybody arrived on time but yourself.大家都按時到達，就是你自己沒有。

?、叟cwho, what, where及形容詞最高級等連用。例如：

?、芨~、代詞、數詞、形容詞、副詞、介詞短語或名詞性從句作賓語。例如：

She was anything but mad.她一點也不瘋。

?、辀ut前的謂語動詞是do時，跟省略“to”的不定式作賓語 。例如：

?、遙ut前的非謂語動詞是to do或doing時，but后的不定式的“to”可省略也可不省略。例如：

?、郻ut前的謂語動詞或短語動詞要求接動名詞時，but后應接動名詞。例如：
He thinks of nothing but making money.除了賺錢，他什么也不想。
That official was afraid of nothing but eating pork.那位官員只是怕吃豬肉。
He could bear anything but hearing such bad news.他聽到這樣的壞消息確實會忍受不了。
?、岵荒苤糜诰涫祝膊荒芘cother連用。例如：
Everyone but me was tired. 除了我以外大家都累了。(=Except for me, everyone was tired.)
Mr. An has no girl-friends but her. 除了她外，安先生沒有別的女朋友。(=Mr. An has no other girl-friend besides /except her.)
?、鈈ut后的代詞，可用主格也可用賓格;但處于主語位置時，用主格代詞更顯得自然和合符習慣，謂語應與but前的主語一致。例如：
No one but we (us) is able to do it.只有我們能當此任。
Nobody but we (us) knows of it. 除了我們外，沒有人知道這事。
You are all wrong but I (me).除我以外，你們都錯了。
I told her that I had never loved anyone but her.我告訴她，除她以外我沒愛過任何人。
